Some of you may have seen that for some time I have been struggling with repentance. Repentance involves being aware that you are a sinner, being broken about your sin, asking God for mercy, and then of course after that point God welcomes you to the kingdom and you are saved. So the key to this is humility. Without the being broken, the humility, repentance won't occur, and salvation will not happen. So I believe this is where I am off the track. Does anyone have any practical suggestions as to what I can do to attain this brokenness and humility that God requires? Yes, I fully expect you to tell me that I am wasting my time and yours by asking this question since if I'm not already broken about my sin, if I can't look upon the cross and weep for what my sin did to Jesus, if I can't humble myself, that I might as well live it up and take my lumps in hell after the fact. But I cannot comfortably do that. This will always keep coming up in my mind. Surely there has to be something I can do.

Shalom @Techedtchr

Try to imagine standing before the throne of the Creator, whilst He is surround with thousands upon thousands of light beings and a high council of elders. Read Ezekiel 1 for an idea of the image of the Throne itself. Picture the Messiah stood before you - having lived life on earth and not sinned and now in a glorified body.

You are next in line on judgment day and you've just seen a believer skipping off in joy into eternal life, their case acquitted.

Now, next to you a screen plays through all your life moments and your inner most thoughts aloud before all of them. Like the most embarrassing, humiliating netflix series ever! Nothing is missed. The Creator, the angels, the high council, the Messiah, Satan and all the people present (maybe even friends and family) watch your life day by day and hear your thoughts.

Would you feel ashamed and repentant at some things or thoughts in your life? Do you have a sick feeling in your stomach imagining having to answer for something cruel, evil, selfish, against the Law of God or another man?

I think if we all saw our lives we would come to loathe ourselves. Our selfish, bitter, twisted, self-serving lives and probably wouldn't blame Yahweh for judging us.

Use that as motivation to repent so you can deal with it now (when there is grace) rather than deal with it then - when there is no more mercy. There is no repenting before Him on that day. You had your life on earth to do that. So, if there is anything you don't want to give a account for on that day, repent.

The above is a simplistic depiction of what awaits us but it isn't far from the truth.

If you are still not motivated to address your issues and past. Read the Word, the whole Word, and soon you'll start to see your flaws and your need to repent.

But we've ALL been there. Thinking we're alright. Then realising we're were wrong and repenting. And then seeing we had more to repent of thereafter.

Thank God He has still given us time to repent before it's too late.

Again I suggest reading the whole Word, but if you want a brief reading plan first, then I suggest...
  • Ecclesiastes
  • Luke
  • Acts
  • Romans
  • 1 Peter
  • James
  • Revelation
May Yahweh bless you with wisdom and open eyes, ears and heart to the truth.

Love & Shalom

Being honest is the first step to true humility. I can't stop being proud. However, I can ask Lord Jesus to be my humility. It's quality that Lord Jesus has and we do not. I suggest that you get hold of a copy of Andrew Murray's book, "Humility". I suspect that it will surprise you and be a great help.

God sees the truth and reality of your condition. You may as well be honest because you can't fool God. Tell Him the truth, that you cannot be humble. That is the most humble statement that you can make! Confess your utter helplessness to save yourself. Ask God to be merciful to you, a sinner. And God will reveal to you that He knows that the sin nature of man is pride itself. He will show you that Lord Jesus death includes you, the sinner. When He rose again, you were in Him so you rose to new life also.

The only thing that you can do is accept Christ. If you can't even get that far, tell God that you are willing to be made willing. He will answer your prayer. He did it for me. He does not show favouritism. I'm as much a sinner as anyone and God saved me.

Very often we only see the reality of sin after we are born again. That's when our eyes are opened. As our hearts are changed, we become more aware of the love of God and how little we deserve it.

Do not despair. Salvation is God's business. Let Him do the work that you need and you will be amazed.

I can't look upon the cross and weep for what my sin did to Jesus

Who says you have to weep over the cross.

A simple question are you sorry for your hatred of Jesus?
Or put it another way are you proud of the things you have done and will have to give up if you become a Christian.

If you are sorry for your sin and have asked Jesus to be your Lord and Saviour then start acting as if Jesus is your commander in chief and you are a raw recruits and start obeying him.

How do I know I am actually praying to Him and not myself? I've been at this for nearly two years and so far I'm only drifting farther. I'm not sure He's even listening - yes, He hears everything but He is only attentive to the prayers of the righteous. There are many, many verses in Scripture that state that there are many who God will not even hear. And unless I go to Him already possessing the attitudes He requires, I am wasting my time and yours, and further provoking Him.

Chris, Jesus said he came to save sinners; not those who think they are already righteous. You know you are a sinner; you don't see yourself as being righteous; He will hear you when you call.

The Lord is all about helping you. The very mention of God humbles me. He died for me, formed in the womb, He has directed my steps since the day I was born. God loves you more than you can comprehend. God has promised you more than you could ever imagine. You have one opponent. You have to fight him, that is The Way.

I would like to encourage you in your faithfulness to Jesus. Humility is esteeming others better than yourself.

God bless always
