If you are married, then you should admit it in a factual manner. Example: "Yes I've been married for 5 (happy) years.

If you are not married, perhaps you can find a light way to say that. Example: Not yet. I haven't found the right person yet." or "No, I don't think marriage is for me."

There are many reasons why someone asks for about marital status nowadays. Even some government forms ask that question. In most cases, you do have the right to not share that information.

If someone asked me, I might say "no." There's not much reason to hide my singleness.

Some people may treat you differently depending on your marital status though, so I can see why you wouldn't want to share that information.
