  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Biden might be in trouble.

There is nothing to win over Barnie’s supporter

If Barnie’s supporter believes it is ok to demonize immigrant and treat them inhumanly , then they can stay home, vote for 3rd party candidate and let Trump get reelected.

If Barnie’s supporter believes it is “American” to block immigration based on skin color or religion, then they can stay home, vote for 3rd party candidate and let Trump get reelected.

If Barnie’s supporter believes it is ok to take away Obama care and kick millions of people out of healthcare system, then they can stay home, vote for 3rd party candidate and let Trump get reelected.

If Barnie’s supporter believes American President should embolden and give creditability to world dictator like N.K dictator, then they can stay home, vote for 3rd party candidate and let Trump get reelected.

If Barnie’s supporter believes there is no difference between Trump policy and Biden policy.. oh well ..then they don’t even understand Barnie’s policy / ideology.. because Barnie’s policy/ ideology couldn’t be far from Trump. It is true Biden policy is far from Barnie but comparing Barnie vs Trump policy , they are day and night different.

So there is nothing to win over.. it is Barnie’s voters choice .. do they want Trump get re-elected and let the country have same policy for next 4 years or they would rather elect someone centrist and stabilize the country. They wouldn’t get most of Barnie’s policy but choice couldn’t be clearer .. Biden a centrist or Trump!

Clearly the kind of conservatism you describe here is not the conservatism I know.. I will take Regan , GW, Bush, McCain’s conservatism over anyone claim otherwise. I will defiantly take McCain conservatism over someone who hide behind “bones spurs” .

You got that right, because the establishment wing is offering nothing. And so the Democratic party will lose again due to defections.

So in other words, just like any other election the progressives are told to vote for who the establishment tells them to, they have no choice, and it is their fault if the party loses. Who wouldn't run to the polls to pull the lever in that scenario?

I doubt it will work any better this time. Putting up increasingly bad candidates time after time and telling people they have to vote for them or feel guilty is not the way to win elections.

So there is a clear choice--vote for a third party candidate who shares more of your views. It is only a wasted vote if people continue to vote for the flawed candidates the establishment pushes.

This is a great point and thanks for bring this up. I often forget when I debate with Trump supporter and they say “ we had no choice…. Clinton was bad and we had to vote for Trump”

As you pointed out .. GOP had 17 other choice, but they chose Trump.

And the Democrats had many choices this time around, and still chose Biden. And those who support him because they "have no choice" are just as bad as those who supported Donald because they "had no choice."

Of course you have a choice. You can vote third party. You can organize a write-in campaign.

This is one way to deal with the double standard problem:

Opinion | I Believe Tara Reade. I’m Voting for Joe Biden Anyway.

Ms. Hirshman is the author, most recently, of “Reckoning: The Epic Battle Against Sexual Abuse and Harassment.”

Let’s be clear: I believe Tara Reade. I believed Anita Hill, too. Remember the buttons? I wore one. What’s the constant here? Joe Biden, then the bumbling head of the Senate Judiciary Committee during the Clarence Thomas confirmation hearings, now the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee.

So stop playing gotcha with the female supporters of Mr. Biden or the #MeToo movement, making them lie to the camera — or perhaps to themselves — about doubting her to justify their votes.

I’ll take one for the team. I believe Ms. Reade, and I’ll vote for Mr. Biden this fall.

I partially agree with you.

The Democrats had many choices and chose Biden - IMO, the worst candidate they could.

However, for me, the calculus is that Trump is so much worse than what the establishment has put forth (which is a very low bar to begin with), that I feel morally obligated to support whatever lousy candidate is up against Trump, because establishment bad <<< Trump bad.

Believe you me, on the chance that Biden wins, I wouldn't then defend Biden against legitimate criticism. Although I suspect the right would largely support him on the things he should be criticized for and be mostly critical of him regarding conspiracy nonsense (Birth certificate, Rev. Wright, etc.).

I know Barnie likes to use the word “establishment” as a scary word like boogeyman to describe other politician .. in politics there no such thing “Establishment” . Joe Biden or Nancy Pelosi , they are where they are because people voted for them. There grandfather, their BOD didn’t appoint them to their position, they didn’t inherit their position … it is every day voter voted for them. They are call “ Elected Official” not Establishment! They will be nobody the moment voter reject them!

You had a choice , we had primary and there were not enough “progressive” vote to elect barnie.. majority primary voter chose Joe Biden.

You may think Biden is bad candidate .. majority primary voter think he is better then Barnie or other 21 candidate …. that is why they voted for him over Barnie.

I actually would prefer Yang over Bernie, but we certainly agree that enough people in the Democratic party voted for Biden.

Where we disagree is that the party establishment is real, and it is not just politicians, it is their donors, and the party leaders. They are unwilling to make concessions to a block of voters who they claim in their coalition. So when that block has now become less and less reliable, that unwillingness to make concessions is hurting them. Continually saying you must vote for us or the world ends, and offering nothing else won't work.

You can’t be Party leader , you can’t be nominee of the party , you can’t be speaker of the house .. unless you are elected. Barnie can lie all day long and call everyone “ establishment” except for himself .. but that doesn’t change the fact that .. people are elected by voter and not by selection

What is wrong with donor .. I know Barnie like to trash billionaire and millionaire .. but what is wrong with them? They are American too!

a. Bernie is not the only one who points out the establishment.

b. What is wrong with large donors is politicians have been known to court their favor or repay their favor.

c. The Democratic party might struggle to elect their nominee when the only pitch is he is not as bad as Trump.

Yes, which must be why Trump is shown in the polls as trouncing Biden... oh, wait, even Trumps own polls show that Biden is currently the front runner.

Personally, I find most of those using the "Establishment" about Democrats are Republicans trying to "create controversy" among Democrats. As for Democrats "needing reasons to vote for Biden other than he isn't Trump," they have plenty of reasons -- not least of which are the reasons Conservative Republicans use when they hold their noses to vote for Trump (Supreme Court nominees, abortion, size of military, social programs, etc).

a) Ok .. other people all call politician they don’t like “establishment” but that doesn’t make it accurate. There is no establishment. They are elected official.

b) Donors can donate as much as they want , and politician can court as much as they want , but at the end donor can only cast one vote. But what seems to be problem here is that the politician you don’t like, many voter vote for them.

c) Well obviously Barnie wasn’t good , if he was better then Biden , he would have gotten more vote and won the nomination.

How did the polls do last time?

The polls tended to be fairly accurate, with the results within the margin of error. The issue was some analysts break down of how it would make the Electoral College look, basically they didn't think every close state would break for Trump, and some were wrong. At best, for those that used percentages, the fact that all these close states needed to go to Trump lead them to post odds that reflected that, making Trump look like a long shot. Of course, all those states did go to Trump. That isn't a fault of the polls -- the polls showed those states were "too close to call."

We do know that last time progressive voters did not all show up to vote for Clinton.

Yes, just like Republicans didn't show up in 2008 or 2012. We'll see how Biden does in getting out the vote. I suspect he'll do much better, if nothing else by merely showing up to the "battleground states," which Hillary didn't and may have cost her the election.

Except for the Bernie supporters who didn't vote Clinton you mean?
Do you think folks like Jimmy Dore or his audience are conservatives?
I didn't vote for Trump last time, and won't this time.

Did you miss the qualifier "most of those?" "Establishment Democrat" seems to have become a big talking point on the Right, seeming trying to influence Bernie supporters to feel upset and not to vote for Biden. That definitely appears to be true here on Christian Forums.

I will add one qualifier -- I do think "establishment candidate" fit in 2016. Clinton bailed out the DNC when they had financial issues and essentially got her people in control. In essence, she rigged the nomination in her favor -- and Bernie still almost beat her (she is not a good candidate, as shown in 2008 and 2016).

This year, for all the claims of "rigged" that I've heard, the fact is the primary rules were altered, with many of them (such as releasing the total vote counts in caucus states) change on suggestion from Bernie. While I know some want to see a "conspiracy" with all the "establishment" (which in this case actually means moderate) candidates ending their campaigns right around Super Tuesday and endorsing Biden -- the simple fact is that it what always happens in political campaigns. The smaller candidates (Klobuchar, Buttigieg, Yang, etc.) ran out of money, so they quit and endorsed the front-running candidate whose stances on the issues were closest to their own -- Biden. It was no different than most any other modern primary when the party does not control the presidency and has a dozen candidates running.

Or they could vote third party and find someone they don't have to hold their nose for.

And that is a possibility. Of course, doing that you add to the chances of not getting a President whose beliefs are closer to your own, and instead end up with the President having opposite positions than you espouse. I think for Bernie supporters, they'll need to decide if they are comfortable with 4 more years of Trump, if they feel Biden will be a better choice (if not who they want), or if they think a third party candidate has a chance of actually influencing the election.

Maybe, but the enthusiasm numbers don't look good, just like the candidates you referenced for the Republicans, and just as Clinton struggled with enthusiasm.

Joe Biden Has An Enthusiasm Problem

A new poll from Emerson University released Tuesday found that while Biden leads Trump by 6 points, only 45% of Joe Biden’s supporters said they’re extremely or very excited to vote for him, while 55% said they’re only mildly or not that excited, a –10 point deficit.

Enthusiasm has been a persistent problem for Biden, with an ABC poll on March 30 showing that just 24% of Biden’s supporters are “strongly enthusiastic” about him compared to 53% for Trump.

Biden’s gap in enthusiasm is reminiscent of numbers that Hillary Clinton had in a November 2016 ABC poll, which showed Trump leading by 8 points among voters who were very excited about their candidate.

No, but I didn't miss that you were replying to me either.

Agreed.

For now I would largely agree. But I would add that it took time for behind the scenes dealing last time to come out.

The larger issue is that it is not just about overt rigging. It also involves a party that is attempting to build a coalition, but while telling one wing of it that they are not going to get the things they want. If progressives are never going to get what they want, they can do that without being part of that coalition. And then they can hope to build something else.

Biden is going to do very little for progressives, and at least with Trump you get full media scrutiny.

Just out of curiosity .. Barnie supporter who didn’t vote for Clinton in 2016 .. how are they liking the way American is running? Are they happy? It seems like other than the satisfaction of “I told you so” .. what else did they get?

Barnie supporter are so hateful and divisive that just to prove a point they would rather see the country be destroyed.

I have greater respect for Trump supporter .. at least they believe what Trump is doing. But Barnie supporter who would rather sit at home or vote 3rd party just to prove their point while the country is destroyed .. they are dangerous for this country! They have no lover for this country .. it is either their way or no way!

I got you. To vote your conscience is wrong. But you saying you will vote for Biden regardless of his faults, that is right.

I am not responsible for other people's vote. If everyone who thought Biden was a flawed candidate voted for someone else we wouldn't have to have Trump or Biden.

They sent a message that you can't build a coalition by neglecting people in it. The establishment hasn't gotten the message yet. They might next time. Or more progressives might get the message they don't need to establishment and should do their own thing.

And no, many don't like the way the country is running. But then Clinton was not for their main issues either. She doesn't make as many racist comments (well, not since the super predator days). But she still sold those weapons to human rights abusers, sold more weapons than the Bush administration, and pushed for action in Libya that resulted in a failed state, and tolerated a genocide by rebel groups we supported.
