At the moment, members of both parties are trying to play some political games with this proposed relief package.

"Paid sick leave" policies are something that the democrats have been trying to push through for some time now, and are exceedingly costly programs, regardless of whether the onus is on government, or the employer, to cover the cost...even more so now with all of the unknown variables about the size & scope of this current health situation.

Republicans are playing some games too by trying to inject the hyde amendment into this relief package.

Both parties will have egg on their face if a compromise isn't reached due to partisan bickering.

Well with a Paid Sick Leave Mandate from the Government you would be forced to pay yourself, even if it meant going out of Business.

This whole idea is wacko, straight out of the Polosi, Schumer playbook.
Its just posturing. They know it wouldnt pass the senate.

You keep thinking that!

I have been there done that, it isn't something I have made up, and when you get older you will understand what I am saying.

The wages you are making now will be peanuts compared to when you retire.

Walmart. McDonalds.

Now you do.

Note Walmart have added a paid sick leave policy for this crisis, so kudos to them. But in their history up until a few days ago they had none.
In addition, McDonald’s would pay employees dealing with coronavirus up to 14 days of sick leave at its corporate stores, which make up about 10% of the locations nationwide.

I am actually having trouble finding a minimum-low wage employer in the US that (current crisis aside) does have some form of paid sick leave. Since you know so many of them, perhaps name a few and link to said policies.

When did I say I know so many of them? I said I did not know any companies that don't have some form of paid sick leave. I never said anything more than that. Since you point out that both McDonalds and Walmart do actually have a form of paid sick leave you have not actually given any example of a company that does not but since I wasn't asking you to give me an example, I am not disappointed.

Just how old do you think I am?
I will say that according to his profile if I remember correctly he is quite a bit older than you.

That's fine and dandy, however, I am thinking he thinks I am younger than I really am.

Unless they did not have to shut down or this could work like FMLA. Where certain employees/employers are not covered.
FMLA does not apply to businesses with less than 50 employees.

Note to our foreign friends -- there is no federal requirement for paid sick leave in the US. Go be sick on your own time.
I find that hard to believe. That would be insane from a population health perspective and an economic perspective.

A healthy workforce is a productive work force: how else can you maintain a workforce? We know corporations will not deviate from a race to the bottom unless forced to.

Here in Belgium
  • we have paid sick leaves automatically, any time
  • a document from the doctor needs to be delivered, but the nature of the sickness is strictly private
  • the employer can not force you to come back earlier than what the doctor advises
  • the employer can require a control doctor to check you, but he needs to have the same qualification as your doctor, so if a dermatologist writes you a sick leaves note, the employer can only send another dermatologist
  • if the sick leaves lasts a month, you are paid by social security at 75% of your income (so tax payers)
  • you can not be fired during sick leaves.

I do not know of any company that does not have some form of paid sick leave
There are many, many employers who do not provide paid sick leave or vacation days or even paid holidays. Right now one of my daughters works at a veterinary clinic with no sick days or vacation days.

Sen. Patty Murray's (D-Wash.) legislation would require employers give workers 14 days of paid sick leave during public health emergencies.

...and a mandated, accrued 7-day sick leave regardless of a state of emergency. Having the government snap its fingers and require every employer in the nation to provide certain benefit packages is strange enough, and deserves discussion, but when the Dems are sneaking in large scale structural changes under the guise of "health emergencies" there's really nothing to even talk about.
