Republicans usually expect people to be accountable for their own actions.

Yes, because people are at fault for coming down with the coronavirus!

Moreover, this is about mandating sick leave it is already a benefit employers may choose to offer and one which can attract and keep good employees.

Most do not offer it because it hurts their pockets. Some will, because as you say it attracts employees, but the majority do not, sadly.

How so? Do you imagine a multi year public health emergency declaration?
I did not say that, but it could be that the government wants to keep paid sick leave and so they do it with the flu, for example ( after all that causes probably millions of people a year to miss several days of work).

I guess they would be fired then. It doesn’t solve the employees problem of not being able afford unpaid days off.
but what I am sayin is what if instead of worrying about getting fired for not showing up when you are sick what would happen if instead you were fired FOR coming in sick thus encouraging people to stay home.

Does the bill in question have a funding mechanism attached to it? How will the federal government pay for these sick leaves? Will taxes be raised or will the government enter into further debt?

And if someone is put on mandatory 14 day quarantine because a customer walked around a store unknowingly infecting other customers and employees? Most workers cannot afford two weeks without pay. How does one “prepare” to be sick?

You just want to be taken care of from Cradle to Grave.

A lot of people do not have that opportunity--they cannot make the "common sense" decision to stay home when they're sick because they might not be able to make rent if they aren't getting paid for even a couple of days.

While not quite the same, I am in a quandary if this gets widespread enough.

I may have to leave my job as an EMT because I am at high risk for complications considering I have asthma. I am not sure what I am going to considering that I live paycheck to paycheck and have responsibilities outside normal bills to pay and an ex-wife who is coming after me for more child support.

but you have the common sense for your own health to avoid that if need be and not go in sick knowing that you have problems/

Well, employees then can force employers to offer sick leave. Demand that as part of the package.

Watch how fast they move onto the next candidate that is next in line.

Every single one I have worked for in industrial construction, all of which were worth hundred of millions or billions of dollars and employed tens of thousands, offered ZERO sick leave to craft employees. Would you like a list?

Of course it does. Overtime, child labor, there are all sorts of labor laws.

Those types of Laws were enacted because of abuses by Labor.
Unions bought about those changes.

The law specifically references public health emergency, which is an objective status that the government declares and rescinds.

I will believe it when I see it.

Like I said, that does not solve the proof employees not being able to afford to stay home.
My idea was if you came in sick you got fired if you stayed home to recover you would not get fired and may or may not get paid ( up to the employer. If you get fired you do not hav a job if you stay home you may not get paid and may have a tough few weeks, but you will be able to pick up more quickly because your job is still there.

Oof, that is tricky. Be safe, and I hope you can find something that works out if things go crazy.
