And if you need to work to afford food or rent? Is it so common sense then?
Yes stay home when your sick to keep the spread down. Employers have the right to OFFER sick leave it should not be mandated. Cases like this are why you have RESERVE.

If you are sick stay home common sense. Frankly an employer with common sense would SEND you home.
Sadly, profit often overrides common sense. And it’s not as simple as stay home when sick if your employer isn’t generous enough to pay you to stay home.

The government has a responsibility to make and enforce regulations/laws that will affect health and safety do they not? The private sector is not exempt from regulations and laws.
no, however the GOP ( with whom I agree for the record believes in having as few government regulations as possibile so this would be in that rim.

Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) blocked an attempt by Senate Democrats to quickly pass legislation on Wednesday that would require employers to provide paid sick leave.

The issue of paid sick leave has jumped into the spotlight amid growing concerns about a coronavirus outbreak within the United States. Individuals exposed to the virus are being recommended to quarantine for at least two weeks.

Sen. Patty Murray's (D-Wash.) legislation would require employers give workers 14 days of paid sick leave during public health emergencies. She tried to get unanimous consent on the legislation on Wednesday, which would have it bypass a vote, but Alexander said he could not support the bill.

Note to our foreign friends -- there is no federal requirement for paid sick leave in the US. Go be sick on your own time.

It absolutely should be mandated. The fact that it's not is why we've ended up in a work culture where people feel obligated (either socially or financially) to go into work even when they're sick. People feel like they should tough out a cold because it's not a serious illness, and then they end up spreading it to everyone else.

This is bad enough at the best of times, but a public health crisis during an epidemic.

I am currently staying home from work without getting paid because I am privileged enough to be in an economic situation where I can afford to do so until I know what's going on in NYC. A lot of people do not have that opportunity--they cannot make the "common sense" decision to stay home when they're sick because they might not be able to make rent if they aren't getting paid for even a couple of days.

Mandated sick leave is necessary, because otherwise people who cannot afford to stay home are going to hide the fact that they might have coronavirus and will wander around infecting everyone else. This is not "be smart and be responsible." This is a public health emergency. The GOP is either to stupid too figure out how reality works, or they are actively trying to kill us.
No, people need the common sense and EMPLOYERS need the common sense that if you are sick go home. Like I had a situation in college where I as part of my degree was volunteering weekly at a church when I told my supervisor I may not come in after having a seizure earlier that day his rely was you will NOT come in. He was not going to LET me that is how it should be you sick and come in anyway employer sends you home.

so honest question are you seriously suggesting people stay home every time they get a cold?

Well it’s 2020 and still it’s not happening by common sense alone so we need something else in place.

It's called employment at will.
Which is why people will go to work sick if there are no protections in place to guarantee they have a job once they are well.

Well, employees then can force employers to offer sick leave. Demand that as part of the package.

Then you're just encouraging people who have mild cases of coronavirus to outright hide the fact that they're ill, avoid getting tested for coronavirus (assuming we were a developed nation and actually had the capacity to test anyone), so that they can slip under the radar and actually be able to pay their bills. This is how you fail to contain an epidemic!

So much for the just stay home thing....
In other words they could fire you for coming in sick just as you have the right to quit without notice. (though that is not advised.

They can fire you for working sick and fire you for staying home. Sounds like a lose-lose situation for the employees.

Welcome to the wonderful world of powerful unions and collective bargaining, without which the employers will just hire people who don't demand sick leave as part of the package instead of those who do. Unequal power in labor is why these regulations need to exist in the first place.

It gonna happen without the backing of a union.
I go in for an interview if they will not give me the benefits I want I turn down their job offer. If I am otherwise a good employee and have the skills they need/want and they want me badly enough they will bend.
