Hi there,

I was baptised last week.

What's should I do now, after baptism?

From what I understand, I should pray more, read the Bible more, and try and find a new job where I help others?

Advice please?

Regards

Matt 18:19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

You have been baptized. You now need to find someone to disciple you, including teaching you how to do all of what our Lord commanded.

Anglican.
Ah, well, an Anglican church is sacramental. Therefore, you should become a regular in attending worship and receiving the Lord's Supper. Your church is liturgical and follows a church calendar which itself follows the great events in Christ's life and ministry, year round. Being comfortable with all of this can be very instuctional.

In addition, you would want to do what any Christian of any denomination would do, which is to engage in Bible study, either through the church itself or a Bible study group or by yourself (although the latter is probably not the best approach for a new Christian).

And the object of all of this is to become familiar with not only the teachings, beliefs, and practices of your parish, but with Christ's moral teachings given to his disciples. That "get a new job" idea that was mentioned in your first post goes too far and should not be taken literally, by the way.

We here are happy to offer advice, but I would urge you not to be timid about posing your question to a priest. A recently-baptized person should be thinking along the lines of your inquiry to us, so there is no reason to hold back.

Hi Albion,

Can you give me some insight in what you've done, or your closest colleagues have done, since Baptism, and what you recommend?

Regards
Lee

One thing you will hear in time, but you can get right now first, about reading the Bible, is to first just read with listening to hear the messages, before you read commentary or study guides or hear thoughts in a study group or any such external aids or books.

And, first, you want to listen to Christ -- so, before (or at the same time as) a bible study group or class just read fully through a gospel, such as Matthew, really listening to Christ, so that His words enter your heart and stay in your heart!

You want to hear His words, and keep them in your heart/mind, which is what He tells us to do.

:)

Take your time, and read until you have something you want to just be with, and then stop there and dwell on that. You can of course also do courses and study groups also, but we are called to truly listen to Him first.

God bless you and I'm so glad to hear you have been born anew!

Here's one place to read unless you already have a good modern bible like an NIV or ESV:

Matthew 1 NIV

Hi, Lee. It's different with me. I was baptized as an infant and grew up in the faith, so that is a situation different from what you are dealing with.

I made some suggestions in post 5, however, so if there is some question about anything in that reply, do ask me about it.

One thing I might offer right now, though, is that you shouldn't worry overly much about this. New members of most organizations want to "get going" when they are initiated, and that's normal, but a regular routine of church attendance, paying attention to the readings for the day and the sermon, and perhaps joining in if there are some extra activities like the Men's group, etc. is plenty enough for getting a start. :)

Order this Book from Amazon.
The Apostles' Creed: Discovering Authentic Christianity in an Age of Counterfeits Hardcover – March 26, 2019
It is a good book for a new convert. It contains the fundemental tenants of faith written in a way you can understand. It also talks of a few issues some churches have with basic Christianity. It is not an all in all book but it is a basis of faith and answers the question, I am a Christian, what do I believe. It does not contain everything a church or a christian may believe but it does contain everything you must believe. I know, others may disagree. But for a protestant especially it is basic Christianity.

I don't know about the new job, that you should seek God for. But yes, read, study, learn and pray. You need to learn about your God and you need to talk to God. Daily at a minimum. More is always better. Seek God and the Bible says you will find Him.

Yes, study the Bible prayerfully, these may help you:

Understand God's plan:

Be wise about God's creation all around you:

Know about the evidence that God left in the earth:

Be inspired:

Study hard, and shew thyself approved:

Welcome!

Albion has the best advice for you as he's also Anglican, however the "job" issue you've here mentioned, is just helping out with charitable endeavors in your spare/free time.. you don't have to change your employ unless your a stripper or something..

But getting involved in helping out with a charity your church is involved with is always a positive experience, and awesome in your new faith. :) most churches have a community outreach of some type to involve yourself in and that allows you to meet others in your church and become on friendly terms with your fellow church goers.

I would say join a regular church, get involved with a housegroup where you can study the Bible with other Christians and deepen your faith. The next step after baptism is to follow up with confirmation and your priest will be happy to discuss courses that are available to you. Attend services regularly for fellowship and teaching and take part in the Eucharist. Look for ways you can serve in the church, either welcoming, helping with prayer or music ministry, reading the Bible, and opportunities to share your faith with others, eg. in an Alpha Course or similar programme.
