  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

It's a Texas Aggie symbol/long horn symbol, but it also a symbol in magic and the occult that does not mean anything pedestrian.
Okay, you start a thread about the meaning of a symbol, and you don't know the difference between the two biggest rivals on the planet - the Longhorns and the Aggies. You're everything that's wrong with this thread.

I can easily admit that I was wrong about that; in fact, I wanted to see who would call it out considering someone else already (correctly) stated it is the UT that does the hook em horns.

And, yes I know they are rivals.

Because I made a mistake with the religion of Texas sports does not disqualify the OP. I understand you are trying to make a point of your disdain within the bounds of the rules of course, but it is a fallacy.

I was ignorant, yes. But it isn't "everything wrong with this thread" - unless you mean the ignorance (of the permeation of racism and white supremacy in law enforcement and the military) is everything wrong with this thread. You have used a device to support your argument, which is (purposefully) distracting.

We can start another thread about the religion of Texas sports, and you can deride my ignorance of rivalries with others who share your opinion - I am being serious. But, don't try to pretend my ignorance of sports rivalries and rituals disqualifies an investigation by West Point and the US Naval Academy regarding possible supremacy displays. It exposes you.

No, it's just that in this case, your ignorance was symbolic of the much more widespread ignorance of a certain type of people.

Oh, ok.

Did you have anything to say about the OP, or did you just want to expose yourself? I don't really care about your prejudice; this isn't hat type of thread.

The problem with racism and white supremacy are the people that are always making excuses and in process normalizing this behavior. Someone postedkmages of different people making the okay gesture. In all the pictures of people making the okay gesture, their hands are in a different orientation than the white supremacists flashing their white power symbol. People k ow the difference, no one has time for the nonsense and obfuscation.

This is why I say people expose themselves. "We" (whoever those persons converse with) are not suppose to be able to pick up on subtleties in psychological and intellectual projections, why they arise, and for what reason they are brought up.

So, sometimes it's nice to play along until one completely exposes one's self. In a way, this entire paradigm in US politics is doing that.

I did have something to say about the OP, except that it was already said by someone else in post #8: it's very stupid.

If you're calling a hand symbol, like the "ok" symbol, a white supremacist gesture....and someone else isnt....

How do you know that you aren't the one projecting psychological and intellectual "projections"?

So, sometimes it's nice to play along until one completely exposes one's self. In a way, this entire paradigm in US politics is doing that.

Sometimes....the more people project evil racism onto things that aren't remotely racist... the more people realize they're just obsessed with racism and ignore them.

This line of thought would be dependent on everyone being fully aware of the white supremacist gesture and the OK gesture and the controversy in general like a weather worn media consumer.

Since I in fact haven't paid any attention I would not be able to tell you the difference. And, I am not of the mind that everyone automatically knows.

So I looked it up:

First article I found:

Pepe the frog here is being a racist, and the article explains that all O.K. symbols are now co-opted.
When the O.K. Sign Is No Longer O.K.

No discussion here that some O.K. symbols are just usual and others are white supremacist ones.

So, lets not act like the rules are clear when the rules aren't clear.

There seems to be, for some, a willful disregard for nuance. Context, intent, and other factors matter.

Malcolm in the Middle - The Circle Game : videos

Hollywood tricked some young lads, including a Lad Of Color, into repeatedly displaying a notorious Nazi symbol almost 20 years before the political left decided to invent it.

They recorded it on video and have been playing reruns ever since. Those young boys have had their lives ruined by rich white men!

But don't worry, they deserve to have their lives ruined because they made a racist Nazi hand symbol on tv and it upset a lot of affluent white liberals.

When the O.K. Sign Is No Longer O.K.

Touching the thumb and index finger to make a circle, with the remaining three fingers held outstretched, is a gesture that people around the world have made for centuries, mostly in positive contexts.

It is used for several purposes in sign languages, and in yoga as a symbol to demonstrate inner perfection. It figures in an innocuous made-you-look game. Most of all, it has been commonly used for generations to signal “O.K.,” or all is well.

But in recent years, it has also been appropriated for a more malign purpose — to signify “white power.” The gesture has become an extremist meme, according to the Anti-Defamation League.

Now, officials at West Point and Annapolis are investigating whether cadets and midshipmen who made the sign with their hands during television coverage of the Army-Navy football game on Saturday were doing so to express racist sentiments.

Army Investigating Alleged White Power Hand Symbols at Navy Football Game

Cadets and midshipmen appeared to flash white power hand signs at Army-Navy broadcast | Daily Mail Online

Officials at West Point and the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis are investigating after several cadets and midshipmen were seen flashing a hand sign sometimes associated with 'white power' at Saturday's Army-Navy football game.

Students at both service academies were seen appearing to flash the controversial hand symbol during a pregame sideline report from journalist Rece Davis on an ESPN broadcast.

The hand symbol, once innocuous and typically meaning 'OK', was initially associated with 'white power' as an online joke, but has since been adopted by fringe racist figures.

Now, military officials are investigating to see what the intention of the cadets and midshipmen may have been in displaying the hand symbol.

15-6 investigation is complete. They were not flashing a racist sign:

Although the gestures were certainly intentional and clandestine, the investigation suggests it was the circle game and not racism.

Every single thing about this says "ill-conceived prank", something that could be settled by a good chewing out and an academy-wide briefing.

But because of how hyper-sensitive people are these days these kids will likely have this incident follow them around for the rest of their lives and may have even destroyed their military careers before they'd begun.
