As I write there are huge uncontrolled bushfires around 20 km west (inland) of me and a smaller controlled fire to the north. We've had a continuous thin pall of smoke, showers of white ash and a sprinkling of partly burnt leaves continuously for the last six days. Everything stinks of smoke. Everything is coated with ash. These fires are throwing smoke, ash and embers 20-30 km. On Friday the world here turned bright orange from sunlight filtered through smoke particles in the atmosphere.
Today the wind's died and the temperature dropped and we're all feeling a little more secure- but the smoke is back. If the wind picks up in the wrong direction, the way out may be a long swim in the Pacific.
