Sexual sin is sin and some are more susceptible than others. The Lord said if your eye causes you to sin; remove it. He expects us to deal with the things which tempt us. The world can’t be sanitized to accommodate someone’s struggle with lust. They must take hold of their body and master it.
Im not saying that, i’m saying as Christians we should not be dressing in a way that causes somebody who is at a lesser spiritual maturity to stumble.

Whats another reason that somebody would show skin

Because it's hot. Or for reasons of practicality relative to the activity being undertaken. Or simply because he or she liked the outfit and wasn't viewing it in terms of the attention it might draw from others.

Just three examples.

The person who struggles with lust is more likely to encounter temptation outside of Christian settings. The majority of Christian women aren’t dressing to entice men at church.

If you are undressing her in your mind irrespective of her attire she is not to blame. Christ said adultery began in the person’s thoughts. But He didn’t charge the object of his interest with the same. He expects us to control ourselves.
Okay first off i didnt say it was in church I said as Christians we should dress with respect to ourselves. Also its not just men lusting after women. Dudes who wear tight shirts to show off there muscles or tight pants to show off other stuff are as much to blame as women who wear revealing clothing. Your body is for your husband/wives eyes only and it should not be something that we flaunt around. Its causes Christians and non christians alike to sin. Whether it was your intention or not, it still happens. Now im not saying its your fault that the person is lusting after you and, not at all! Im saying we have a higher responsibility to dress appropriately to reduce that from happening.

These are guidelines of Pure Fashion, but they are for minors who are being trained in modesty. I think once a girl grasps the concept, she has more freedom for variations in her adulthood:

There is something to say here, that everyone likely needs to understand. Women are attractive to men, regardless of what they wear.

I could wear an abaya with niqab and have American men drool with lust.

1.) most women cannot actually hide their female form, even wearing a tent..

and

2.) anything that seems "forbidden" or "taboo" seems to create an "other" that makes a person even more desirable due to the fact she is a challenge.

The key to modest dress is literally to not bring undue attention to oneself.. if everyone is running around dressed a certain way, and your not blending in it draws attention.

in summer heat a woman need not dress for aiding heat stroke, she can wear a light weight summer top and a pair of Capris or shorts that have a little length to them for the store or park and still be modest in dress while blending in more with the crowd in most western nations..

Once you realize just how much flesh it takes to make men swoon

you begin adapting your wardrobe centered more around comfort and a general sense of modesty and decorum..

No matter who you are, man or woman if you are showing skin, it is to draw attention to yourselves. You are more likely to see a dude with a six pack shirtless on a beach rather than a heavier dude. And it is a stumbling block, you are causing another person to lust. People pick clothing that will make them look the best that they can look. Period.
You are twisting scripture and adding to God's Word that which He never said.

Showing skin?

My face is covered with skin. So are my hands. Are they to be covered, too?

What skin are you talking about?

Show me scripture... I do not want any person's opinions...

Let's see...

  • Taking a bath (remember, for most of human history, bathing was done outdoors at public waters)
  • Seeing a doctor
  • Catching some sun (good source of Vitamin D)
  • Cooling off (God's intent in the design of human skin was to allow for evaporative cooling)
  • Swimming (swimming is a MUCH better experience without clothes)
  • Comfort (ever notice that "comfortable clothing" always means "loose clothing"?)
None of these things have anything to do with "drawing attention" by "showing skin"...

But you seem to think that the MOST important thing about skin is whether it is visible or not.

Why?

That's not what God thinks about human skin... in fact He literally LIKED it when Adam and Eve were fully naked... and made a point of describing all of creation as "Very Good"... while the first humans were still completely "showing skin" (Genesis 1:31).

Took me a while to find where I remembered seeing the reference, and I couldn't remember the actual Greek term when I wrote the post, so hence "professional prostitute", but what I more specifically referring to were the Hetairai.

Hetairai: The Ancient Athenian Courtesan

I first came across them in reference to scripture when I read a book called "What Paul Really Said About Women" though I've seen it in a couple other places over time that the specific apparel Paul was describing in the passage matched with apparel the Hetairai would have worn, so a woman wearing such extravagant apparel out in public might be mistaken for one of these ladies.

Personally, I believe the idea that Paul is warning his readers away from flaunting wealth is enough in and of itself, but when there are other possibilities as well, it only goes to reinforce that scripture is NOT as clear as those who wish to use scripture in order to put burdensome limitations on other people seem to want people to believe.
Thanks for the link.

I really agree with your statement... "I believe the idea that Paul is warning his readers away from flaunting wealth is enough in and of itself" and I would stop there. We simply should not go beyond what it clearly says, and as you said, those who do so are generally attempting to control the behavior of other people... and that is wrong... always.

Explain to me why it was OK for Jesus to "cause" the Pharisees to "stumble"... because they definitely sinned against God by their reactions to Jesus and the things He said and did.

In the end and constantly is God searching and judging us. So we should not deceive ourselves because that way we hinder the wonderful things that God wants us to be since he Delights in our joy.

So some people will say "hey don't judge me" as they wallow in the mire in comparison to what God wants to give us. Other evil spirits attempt to keep everyone out of God's Kingdom with a facade of righteousness.

So modesty just means clinging to God and being part of his kingdom. No knowledge can truly show what actually being comforted by and being near God is like. So judge yourselves to see if you're wallowing in the mire or if you're rejoicing at the feet of God.

I'm teenage and female.

My perspective so far is that modesty just means being appropriate and not showing off wealth and stuff. I think its ok to wear crop tops or whatever when hanging out with friends, because it feels good to be confident and feel like you are wearing something special. And for things like homecoming i think its cool to wear more cocktail style dresses because again, those look good.

I think that its all about occasion, not rules. I am very short, so knee length dresses with loose fit and high necklines basically swallow me up and it makes me feel bad.

As females, i don't get really why we have to "hide" our feminine energy. Like all through history, women's energy and feminity has been celebrated, and we were given strong and beautiful bodies, so like why hide them?

I have extreme ocd though, and am constantly worried about causing a brother to stumble, even tho i tbh find that a bit of a patriarchal trope.

If anyone can reply or has more advice or opinions to this, then i will greatly appreciate it!

What does Christian modesty mean for men and women in today’s culture?

To facilitate the discussion I’m requesting three things from respondents:

— Please share an opinion based on your gender first. This subject skews disproportionately towards women and I would like to see edifying comments for both sexes.

— Please provide biblical support for your opinion if applicable.

— And for the sake of clarity for everyone, please share a visible example of the modest attire you’re addressing. Please avoid posting immodest images or videos in deference to those with struggles.

Thank you. I look forward to your response. :)

Hi! So I'm a teenage girl, and I am confused a bit. I think its fine to wear crops or whatever, since we were given naturally beautiful shapes as women, and its a part of our femininity. I want to know if you think thats bad. Like, what do you think its ok if you are just going to hang out with friends or something?

I think it really all comes down to a matter of right attitude. One could be wearing, for one example, tight leather everywhere and be covered with tattoos and showing some skin because that's what makes them happy, but be far, far more modest in bearing than someone who dresses conservatively with the most expensive designer brands with the labels all in clear view for the purpose of making sure everyone knows how wealthy and superior they are. Of course, a different person could wear the exact same thing and be modest because they aren't doing it for the purpose of competing with their neighbors on climbing the social ladder.
Well, exactly; and in any case leather jackets and tattoos have been pretty mainstream for years.
