for our salvation?

What must we do?

Is our salvation a one-time event, or a process / journey?

How would you describe the salvation process or event theologically, or practically?

I considered doing a survey, but realized that the sheer diversity of possible answers does not lend itself very well to a handfull of answers. I am genuinely interested to know what people have to say on this.

Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, Protestant, non-denom, just a Christian Christians, everyone is welcome to weigh in.

God bless all of you.

I think it's this:

Matthew 22:36-40

36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”

37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself. 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

Because he gets into this Later:

Matthew 25:34-40

34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

Jesus' part.. live a life and death of totally putting the will of God before His own thus opening the door to salvation from the original punishment by way of resurrection and the Kingdom beyond.
Our part.. for a start, understand and reject the implications of what got us condemned in the first place compared to the will of God.

From my understanding God knows who will realize and wake up to His reality and who wont. Salvation is a one time revelation of Jesus Christ, it is when you realize you need a savior and that Jesus died so we can have a connection back with our Father. I call it the "aha! Moment". Transformation to become like Christ is an ongoing growth and discovery of that revelation. You can't be transformed (be sanctified) by yourself. It happens when you have a relationship with the Lord.

One time someone said that when we meet God He will asks us if we knew how much He loves us. I tell people to camp on the cross and to dig deep into the significance of His death and resurrection and what it means to us and the world.

Not much, just follow the commandments, keep the sabbath holy, observe some or all of the laws of Moses, live the beatitudes, love God with all your heart mind and soul, love thy neighbour as thyself, sell everything and follow Christ, avoid the snares of the devil, don't commit the unforgivable sin, walk the narrow path, pray always, do all things for the glory of God, love not the world or the things in it, speak in tongues, don't be anxious, buy from Him gold refined in the fire, wash your robes in the blood the Lamb, store up your treasures in heaven, know your catechism, don't fall into sin and error, heresy or abomination, proclaim the gospel to the ends of the earth, rejoice, stay vigilant and so on and so forth.

But mainly, take heart, for he has overcome the world. His yoke is light. God takes perfect care of our salvation - He gave His word. So let's just have a little faith.

What must we do...

He initiates - He draws, He invites us to respond to His Love.

Seeing His Holiness, Purity, Sovereignty, Love, we are required to surrender all to have Him inhabit our lives, but He can't co-exist with sin so we need to repent, and give Him complete control.

When He takes up residence in us we are born again.

That is the beginning and there are two aspects to salvation - Our new status as an adopted child, and our human condition that needs to progressively be changed into the character of Jesus.
Our status as an adopted child we never lose.
Our condition is modified by His Spirit as we surrender to His will in childlike obedience - this also qualifies us to receive the blessings of the Kingdom.
The degree to which we walk in obedience to His will, equates to the eternal rewards we accumulate.

So the new birth is immediate and permanent, but the process of becoming more like Jesus takes a lifetime and never ends in this life. At resurrection we are finally perfected and live in perfect communion with Him forever.

Simply? Have faith in Christ, pray for more faith in Christ, actively strive to repent and follow Christ's Commandments, whilst partaking of the Holy Eucharist for spiritual strength. All the rest is just extra support to get you there.

Wrong. Sorry, you are missing the point. You want to talk about works? John 6:29 "Jesus answered and said to them, "This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent.""

The Law simply proves to us that we cannot keep it, no matter how hard we try. The righteous did not know that they were being righteous, because what they did was from the new life within them. When we are born again, we have a new nature. We do not become righteous by good works. We do good because Lord Jesus within inspires and empowers us.

Not much? Only one Person has lived that life, and it's not you or me. Only Lord Jesus fulfilled every commandment of God. If you are trusting in your own works, you are in big trouble (Galatians 3). All you have to do is break one commandment and you are history. I'm glad that Jesus lives in me to be all that God requires me to be. I don't count any more because I'm dead and buried. There is a new man within me, raised together with Christ, who is my life. All my "do's" and "do nots" are in Christ, not me.

Is our salvation a one-time event, or a process / journey?

It is both.

We are saved solely by Jesus's death and resurrection. By faith which is a gift from God.

We don't deserve the gift of salvation, but having recieved it we willingly serve our saviour by obeying his commands.

The Christian recieves salvation as a free gift but also works to show he/she is a Christian by doing good works. In this way it is both.

And yet it spells out those people as inheriting the kingdom. No you can't get into the kingdom thru works alone. But clearly those works were important to Jesus. Or else why mention it in such a way?

And yes I can do those works. There are many that don't even believe in Jesus that do those works.

Being saved and entering the Kingdom of God are two different things - hence the confusion.
Exactly. Are you from Tauranga? I know of a church there calls themselves "Jesus plus nothing". That's a good saying. I ran out of time to go there last time I was in NZ.

Such works as unbelievers carry out do not impress God one bit. Neither do the works that Christians can do in their own natural abilities. It is only what is of Christ that pleases God. If we could do what God requires of us, we would not need Jesus. Many Christians are going to get a rude shock when they see their works go up in flames.

And yet we know we're doing the right works and with the right attitude when we do them and get filled with the Holy Spirit of God. Which is manifest by his Fruits: Galatians 5:22-23

Auckland, don't know the church...
My family lived in Tauranga for some years. My sister used to go to that church. She loved it. It's good to talk to someone who knows the difference between being "saved" and entering the kingdom of God. Look me up if you ever get to Melbourne!

Back to front. Be filled with the Spirit, then you will be led by the Spirit and good fruit will result.

I believe we are justified by grace through faith, which is a one time event where God reckons us as righteous on account of Jesus Christ.

I believe we are sanctified by the by the work of the Holy Spirit. Sanctification is a process where we become what God reckons us to be, i.e. righteous.

This is salvation: justification and sanctification. It is both a one time event and a process wholly dependant on the grace given to us in Jesus Christ.
