Congratulations to the US Women for their World Cup win! Congratulations also to the Dutch team who played an excellent game.

I have already seen posts on FB saying that the US Women shouldn’t have won because several have said that they will not go to the White House to celebrate the win. Of course this ignores the fact that inviting winning sports teams to the White House is a relatively new thing.

I also saw one post on FB saying that they shouldn’t have won because there are lesbians on the team, like that really makes any difference.

Again, congrats US Women and Dutch Women!

My complaint with the team is, they play soccer, but they have used the new found platform to speak out on any number of issues as though because they play soccer that gives them a voice we as regular non sports figures don't have should listen to.

Just play the game, if you are good enough to win the trophy, great, but we as the public don't need to hear what you think or believe on any other subject other than the sport with which you are affiliated.

I’ve heard that from some others. Of course sports figures have been doing that for a long time.

Yes they have but, it doesn't mean they should.

Celebrities in general feel as though just because we as the public like them for what it is they do, they have the god given right to influence us.

They don't.

In general I agree. But wouldn’t you say that the black Olympian’s who protested racism at the Olympics back in the 60’s were in the right?

Of course, worth nothing that the majority of the women on the team didn’t do that.

Agreed.

Of course, worth nothing that the majority of the women on the team didn’t do that.

That says something for the majority, and how they feel they should act.

Now it's important to know what the agenda is that causes the minority to have such a loud voice, that they are the ones getting the publicity for their political views, rather than the majority getting the headlines for what they do on the field.

First congratulations to the women’s USA team for a great victory. I was following the WC closely and all the games were exciting. I missed the championship game but will watch the replay.

I’m not going to ask but will say you have strange FB friends to receive such comments. I have a Bible thumping extended family with also many Roman Catholics. I saw nothing but good comments for the Lady strikers from the USA.

Not always

Except I never said that every sports figure had done it. Fortunately there have always been great men like Lou. But there were also great athletes like the Olympians who fought racism.

You will enjoy it.

The comments were posted by two people, both right-wing fundamentalists. When you have as many FB friends as I do, you will have a few oddballs. Nevertheless, the comments were made.

...why shouldn't they use their fame to promote things they feel strongly about?
tulc(is just curious)

Because my constitutional right not to hear celebrities say things I find offensive must (somehow) supersede a celebrities supposed "right" to say things that offend me.... right?

I mean, I'm right, right?
