• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Hello I have autism/aspergers and have a hard time understanding scripture, can someone help if they do not mind and have time.

When I was young I missed 90% of grade school and then finally went to a vocational high school where I started to smarten up, but it was to late.

I am a christian that has been studying the bible since 2002 off and on

I am extremely shy and hardly talk anymore. I was hoping to find a way to study the bible with someone all the while remain myself.

Church at the moment is a no go and I can barely take care of myself let alone associate with others.

Life just seems to be on the brink of giving up my independence and move into a home for people with sever problem health wise.

Just looking for a hand up.

Pray the prayer in Ephesians 1.
Intelligence has nothing to do with it. I have a measured IQ of 156. I graduated summa cum laude with a degree in computer science and retired as a systems engineer. l have written over a dozen books on various subjects. None of that helped me to understand scripture or get faith.
This did:

Ephesians 1
Paul’s Prayer for Spiritual Wisdom
15 Ever since I first heard of your strong faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for God’s people everywhere,[a]
16 I have not stopped thanking God for you. I pray for you constantly,
17 asking God, the glorious Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, to give you spiritual wisdom and insight so that you might grow in your knowledge of God.
18 I pray that your hearts will be flooded with light so that you can understand the confident hope he has given to those he called—his holy people who are his rich and glorious inheritance.

Well, first, pick a Bible at the right level. As a rough guide:

KJV & RSV - Grade 12
ESV - Grade 10
NIV & CSB - Grade 8
NLT - Grade 6

Second, feel free to ask any question you have in the "Scriptures" forum.

What questions do you have?

This:
Matthew 3:16-17 English Standard Version (ESV)
16 And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him,[a] and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; 17 and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”

Does this show the trinity in action?

Is t tthis piece of scripture saying that the holy spirit is God along with the Father? And is there other instances that say the holy spirit is God?

5 But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession. 2 And he kept back part of the proceeds, his wife also being aware of it, and brought a certain part and laid it at the apostles’ feet. 3 But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself? 4 While it remained, was it not your own? And after it was sold, was it not in your own control? Why have you conceived this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God.”

Was the father, son and holy spirit always around from the beginning?

John 1 tells us about the Son: 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God [meaning, the Father] in the beginning. 3 All things were created through him, and apart from him not one thing was created that has been created. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of men. ... 14 The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. We observed his glory, the glory as the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Try the NIV. It was specifically written to be understandable in the modern world with the English form all of us know. There is no need to read old British English, which is very confusing for many people.

Your symptoms look more like classic autism than Asperger's syndrome to me, but I will not judge you. If you ask questions in the Theology - Scripture section, you are more likely to get a lot of answers.

I know what you're going through. Personally, after years of reading the KJV (as that's what my parents said was THE ONLY version we should be reading  ) I finally gave it up and traded it in for a New American Standard and a NIV. Why do I have both? I read the NIV as a study Bible to get the easier comprehension and then read the NAS to see if they missed/altered anything. Not going to debate accuracy here...I'm sure some will say this/that about versions. This works for me, so find some combination of Bibles that will help. Online resources are great, too. bible.com, biblegateway.com to name a few are great resources which give you comparisons.

What else helps? Commentaries! The MacArthur Bible Commentary is a must in my opinion. When I'm studying a particular passage and I still can't figure out what in the world they meant, I open my commentary (and I have a few different ones) to see the elaboration/explanation of what was intended by the author. I personally like Dr. John MacArthur's teachings so I trust his interpretations. Another recommended help is Strongs exhaustive Bible concordance. That helps in looking up passages/words that you want to see the original Hebrew/Greek meaning to interpret & understand yourself.

I hope this helps.
