Gibson’s Bakery awarded more than $11 million in years-long legal battle with Oberlin College
So here's what happened....
A Bakery that is family owned and well established amongst the college community and on the other side, Oberlin College is a very proudly liberal college that prides itself on being progressive.
One day a black male student decided to try and stuff a couple of bottles of wine under his shirt, and purchase some items with a fake ID. The white owners of the bakery see this guy coming a mile away, and the son of the owner chases the black guy as he flees out the front door (with the stolen goods I think). The owner's son, who is white, tackles the thief...but unbeknownst to him, the thief had two friends waiting for him outside. The three black students proceed to beat the owner's son...and get arrested.
From what I understand, they then started spreading rumors about the Bakery being racist and profiling black customers (yes, even though they were robbing the place). The heavily liberal college community grabbed onto these accusations and ran with them....essentially forming very large protests with the intent of denying the Bakery any business and driving the racist family that owned it out of town (yes, even though they aren't actually racist). These protests included administration for the college and professors who were obviously trying to virtue signal as hard as they possibly could.
Eventually, the protests died down when the robbers accepted a plea deal where they admitted to guilt and admitted that racism had nothing to do with the incident. Oberlin College tried to reform its customer relationship with the Bakery....but the Bakery decided to sue the college for all the profits they lost and hardship they endured.
The Bakery won the case...there was clear evidence that they were financially harmed by the allegations of racism and protests...and they were awarded 11$ million dollars.
Thoughts? Any idea why so many students and professors (supposedly educated people) would just believe accusations of racial profiling and racism?
The bakery sued the liberal arts college and Vice President and Dean of Students Meredith Raimondo after a robbery at the bakery.
Three black Oberlin students were arrested after one tried to use a fake ID and shoplifted from Gibson’s in 2016, according to the Chronicle-Telegram, which extensively covered the case. Allyn Gibson, the white son of the bakery’s owner, followed the students out of the store and got into a physical altercation with them.
