  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Philippians 2:13
Php 2:12,13 Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed— not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence— continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose.

Salvation by Works Christians typically misconstrue "work out" to be "work for", which is not what it says. Having been saved and as such Eternally Secure, the believer works out applications of faith. It's part of the sanctification process where maturity in Christ is a function of one's cooperation with the Spirit.

Gal 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Gal 5:16 So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature.

His works that He's prepared for us to do, our cooperation.

We're saved through faith (Phil 3:9), as the means to communion with God who, alone, can justify us. Man cannot justify himself, with or without the Law; God's Spirit must reside within him. Faith is not some kind of replacement for authentic righteousness, or a license to escape from its obligation. Rather it's the means to it.

Paul knew that his "righteousness" as a Pharisee was s***, even if perfectly executed on the outside, because the inside must be clean first of all while the outside counts for nothing by itself. The word often translated as "uncleanness" or "filth", or "impurity" describing the Pharisees inner state in Matt 23:27 has an interesting etymology too from my understanding.

John 10:28 I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one can snatch them out of My hand. 29My Father who has given them to Me is greater than all. No one can snatch them out of My Father’s hand.

The devil may devour the weak and lazy....but he can't snatch you from Jesus hand.
Nope, but I can "jump" anytime I might waver in my faith.
It is incumbent on us to stay "in Christ".
The weak and lazy have taken their salvation into their own hands...to their detriment.

My Works?
His Works?
Our Works?

Justification/Sanctification
Here's what I think is the Scriptural answer to the question:

"For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them" (Ephesians 2:8-10).

Umm yes.
He remains faithful..
That also means he will faithfully punish the unrepentant for thier wickedness because they did not believe on the one he sent to listen to him and obey him.

Per context... there is zero way to interpret that from the passage. 2 Timothy 2:13

Gal 5:16 So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature.
One cannot "work for" to earn God's free gift, but one must work to meet the conditions God has placed upon His free gift in order to receive God's free gift.

Phil 2:8 "And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross."
Phil 2:9 "Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:"
Phil 2:10 "That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;"
Phil 2:11 "And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Phil 2:12 "Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling."
Phil 2:13 "For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure."

In verse 12, Paul begins by saying "wherefore"......wherefore as Christ was obedient (verse 8) we must also, as Christ, be obedient by working out our own salvation. (Hebrews 5:9). Those in Philippi had been obedient...."as ye have always obeyed". Their obedience earned them nothing no more than Christ's obedience earned Him anything.

"work out" means to carry out to the finish, not stop before the finish line. (2 John 1:8). Man has a role in his own salvation therefore salvation is NOT God deciding for men which men will be saved or lost. Man has free will to work out his own salvation..."God worketh in you" means God is working in those who obey His will. It does not mean God does all the work while man is idle. If God did all the work, then the Christian would be perfect in all he does, without any sin at all. God's word works in men changing, pricking man's heart (Acts 2:37) prompting man to "save thyself" (Acts 2:40) by doing God's will.

Which is the same thing - salvation by works, as was also the position of your forefathers among the Christian sect of the Circumcision.

If we do anything good it's because of God. They are then Gods works that save us. Along with his grace and love that he wants to save us.

Because it is a common every day fact that free gifts can and sometimes do come with conditions. Can one be saved without meeting the condition of having faith? Or will men be saved UNconditionally and faithless?

If by "salvation by works" you mean one is trying to earn the free gift of salvation, then that is a straw man.

A free gift cannot be earned, but one must meet the conditions God has placed upon His free gift and meeting the conditions do not earn the free gift.

Where does the Bible teach that being saved will not cost a person something?

Salvation cost Christ His life, salvation will cost man to live and do as Christ's NT gospel says he should live and do whereby man cannot live anyway man wants to live. Yet this cost does not earn the free gift of salvation. David would not offer to God that which cost him nothing, 2 Samuel 24:24-25. Too many people think they can give to God that which cost them nothing, that which is no sacrifice to them but expect much in return from God. Malachi 1:13-14 God did not accept that which does not cost man, which is not a sacrifice to man.

Romans 12:1, one's life is to be a living sacrifice to God.

Faith is a free gift that comes along with regeneration.
