  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

i dont see anything wrong with maintaining centuries long traditions to honor our God. i think some traditions are beautiful. for instance the Catholic church and some other Churches once ran prayer houses where a small donation to support those elders was in used in return for many prayers of mercy for the afflicted one.

2 Thessalonians 2:15
"Therefore, my brethren, be established and hold the commandments fast that you have learned, whether by discourse or by our epistle."

"Therefore, brethren, stand fast and retain the doctrine which ye have been taught, whether by word or our epistle."

"So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold fast to the teachings we passed on to you, whether by word of mouth or by letter."

"With all these things in mind, dear brothers and sisters, stand firm and keep a strong grip on the teaching we passed on to you both in person and by letter."

"My friends, this is why you must remain faithful and follow closely what we taught you in person and by our letters."

"Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle."

Which translation do you traditionally hold to?

Someone provide the word in the original please.

My response would be that you likely have traditions that you cannot even see because of your denial that you have traditions. Everybody else I have talked to about this has traditions. Even those who say they have no traditions. I suspect you are no different. The danger for you is that you cannot see your traditions and as a result you cannot scrutinize them.

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. He has broken me free from every side of myself. :)

I'm trying to imagine what life must be like without traditions. How long are the sermons at your church on Sundays?
I know I'm kind of butting in, but I can tell you what no traditions is like.

Are biblical traditions..outside of the sinner's prayer...necessary for salvation? If not, what makes them worth our time?

The sinner's prayer isn't necessary for salvation.

Okay, I did some quick googling:

Greek word:
Strong's #3862 - παράδοσις - Old & New Testament Greek Lexicon

Hebrew equivalent:
Strong #: 612 ‑ אֵסוּר (ay‑soor');
Strong's #612 - אֵסוּר - Old Testament Hebrew Lexicon

1) band, bond

2) house of bonds, prison (figurative)

From the root אָסַר:

1) to tie, bind, imprison

1a) (Qal)

1a1) to tie, bind

1a2) to tie, harness

1a3) to bind (with cords)

1a4) to gird (rare and late)

1a5) to begin the battle, make the attack

1a6) of obligation of oath (figurative)

1b) (Niphal) to be imprisoned, bound

1c) (Pual) to be taken prisoner

Strong's #0631 - אָסַר - Old Testament Hebrew Lexicon

אסר - Wiktionary

And yet Paul wrote it in something which the Church canonized as Scripture that word of mouth teaching could be valid. And more to the point that Traditions were things we should hold to as matters of the faith.
Paul wrote it, but generations later, there is no guarantee of reliable transmission of oral traditions.

People like me need to take every scrap of information and test it for fruit, then make a conclusion.
