  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Each year, ADL’s Center on Extremism (COE) tracks murders perpetrated by all types of extremists. The 2018 Murder & Extremism report provides key insights into the crimes, including motivations behind these violent attacks.

I'm not surprised. What might be more interesting is to compare the power structure of multiple nations against who commits more violent acts. IOW, is right-extremism always more violent, or is it more violent in left-leaning nations (and vice-versa)?

I recall a study from years back indicating that if an underclass gains power it tends to be just as oppressive as the government it replaced.

Do they put out statistics on killings that were only motivated by ideology? And how do they determine which ones are motivated by ideology and which are not?

Dude. Take a breath.

Questions keep popping into my mind. Does that annoy you? My background in Education made me somewhat tolerant of questions.

Where is this Center located? Can one tour their facilities?
Did you read the report and their methodology and not find the information you want or are you just attempting to discredit the report by asking questions implying that proper methodology was not used?

One should not ask questions without first reading the literature.

I am asking questions because I do not know the answers. I hoped someone would answer the questions in order to become more informed. Are all the answers to my questions included in the report? I will see if they are.

It seems that ADL stand for Anti-Defamation League. I only found that after searching a bit as all I found was one tiny mention at the bottom of the page with the copyright. I guess they must think everyone knows what ADL stands for. I always thought that it was the Jewish Anti Defamation League. So I did not recognize ADL as being the same organization I thought of . I guess I was misinformed. I did not see the address or whether they gave tours . I saw no explanation of why they lump anarchists in with the left wing. nor did I see an answer about ideologically only killings or how they decide if a killing is not ideologically motivated. Did I miss it somewhere?

I'm sure you can contact them and ask for more information regarding details of the report.

The note says deaths include non-ideologically motivated killings. What the deuce? I guess that means a guy who voted Republican once could kill his neighbor over a neighborhood beef and that could be included in the stats as right-wing extremist violence? I mean, not that the left-wing ADL would do that...

From an ideal perspective, it would make sense to separate them. But I expect all that would accomplish is to create arguments about how they decided to separate them.

One thing that would be easy to do is normalize the numbers per capita.

Was perusing the report. They label "incels" and "sovereign citizens" as automatic right-wing. This sounds like biased nonsense.

It would also be easy to include all the incidents in the report, instead of highlighting a few that are to their liking.

Incels and sovereign citizens are part of the right-wing extremist sphere. Much as anarchists align with left-wing extremists. Could there be a specific person that falls outside those definitions (e.g., laissez-faire anarachists)? Sure, but you're free to go through each case and dispute why for example, incels are not right-wing. I have yet to see a non-right-wing incel.

This article may help clear some things up. I think you may have the wrong idea about how these people and groups are defined. I had to search around to find out myself.

With the rising trend in right-wing extremism, U.S. federal and local agencies need to shift some of their focus and intelligence resources to penetrating far-right networks and preventing future attacks. To be clear, the terms “right-wing extremists” and “left-wing extremists” do not correspond to political parties in the United States, such as Republicans or Democrats. Opinion polls in the United States show that most Republicans and Democrats loathe terrorism.

But we're talking about the ADL report here. It seems clear enough.
