There's more going on here than meets the eye. I believe many on the actual border would like to have more 'toys' than a fence, regardless of their effectiveness.

A Ponzi scheme is when more and more investors are needed to repay the initial investors. IOW:

People who are now collecting social security retirement benefits are the initial investors. They are receiving what they paid into it. However, the funds being paid out are more than collectively paid into it to begin with. This problem is made worse by the fact that the US Government took money from the SS fund to pay other items in the budget. So to continue paying what the initial investors (i.e. you) the government has to use some of the funds that people who have not yet retired have paid into the system.

To keep ahead of this problem, more and more people have to pay into SS to support the ones already receiving benefits. For now that isn't a concern. But when people who retired at say age 65 are living into their 90s (not unusual due to today's health care availability) that's much longer than was originally anticipated to collect benefits. And the problem is just going to get worse.

Apologies for the continued off-topic, but I wanted to clear this up.

There are two meanings of the word "statistics." You are indeed correct that people call data that is presented to the public "statistics," but there is also the science of statistics, which is the use of mathematics to evaluate and analyze data (and to create the "statistics" that you're referring to).

You original assertion that he should correctly say that he "processed statistics with data" is nonsensical - data is simply information and means next to nothing without statistical analysis. It cannot be used to process anything.

One needs to look at what comes out of the process. Data cannot be made to lie, statistics are routinely used to deceive. Of course that is not the intention of the statisticians but that is what often happens. They aren't able to control "their baby" once in the hands of those with an agenda.

So as long as statistics remain in safekeeping of the statisticians we are safe from their misuse.

Ponzi schemes are illegal. SS isn't. And no one has yet been defrauded by the SS Administration, in fact it has been a blessing to millions since the day it was created.
