Oh my how sad for this teacher. Must have learned in his college contemporary freedom from religion class the traditional candy cane was a misogynist patriarchal ploy to marginalize non Christians.

I saw this on the news earlier tonight. Except for the deranged hate targeted at our President, there is no derangement syndrome as evident or poisonous as the anti-religion group out there. Unfortunately some have made it into the education system.

And it seems the more they are resisted, the more shrill, discordant, irrational, and downright incomprehensible they get.

Common sense doesn't seem to have any effect on it. Maybe if we all worked at it, prayer would?

It's shaped like a cane, not a J.

What's worse is she was probably a teacher at one time.
Nice catch....
Could also symbolize a shepherd's staff........

Matthew 2:6
[Micah 5:2]
And thou Bethlehem, land of Judah, not being inferior-most are in the ones-leading of Judea.
For out of thee shall be going-forth One-leading, Who-any shall be shepherding My people Israel.
John 10:
11 “I am the good Shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep.
16 “And other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they will hear My voice
and there will be one flock and one Shepherd.
1 Peter 5:4
and when the Chief-Shepherd appears,
you will receive the crown of glory that does not fade away.
Hebrews 13:20
Now may the God of peace who brought up our Lord Jesus from the dead,
that great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant,

Probably believed one too many facebook memes where yahoos were passing it around that the red and white stripes 'stand for' something and the "J" shape is for Jesus...

I think someone has said the red stands for the blood of Christ shed for us, on the cross.

White could be purity, how His blood washes us whiter than snow.

And it is sweet to trust in Jesus.

yes I've seen such nonsense as well. Not in the sense that Christ shed his blood or that the sentiment is invalid.. but in the sense that the red and white on a candy cane has everything to do with the traditional coloring of peppermint candy as a way to identify it by sight and nothing to do with anything remotely sacred.
It is that type of nonsense that would also say the shape is for "J" meaning Jesus which would lead the misguided principle to make such an ignorant declaration in the first place.

Well, the world's reason does not have to be our reason :) God takes what the world does and uses it for His purpose.

And if you are in Orthodox, do you not believe in having symbolic art and statues which help you to remember and meditate on sacred things? May be you consider use of candy canes for symbolism to be crossing the line or overdoing it. Possibly, you trust in having only the meditative objects which are duly authorized.

I understand we do have communion for the remembrance of Jesus > He says do this in remembrance of Him. So, you might rather stay with this and not use candy canes for remembrance.

I side with the Principle on this its a secular school there should be NOTHING of ANY religion done in school unless its topical in a class in an academic way year round. He is following the duty to keep the school neutral by not practicing a religious holiday.

I agree with you. I don't think the Christian version of Christmas or any other religious holiday should be (for the lack of a better description) shoved down the throats of children in a public school. I think secular public schools should be kept neutral too. I think we can both imagine the moral outrage from many Christians if Christian children in a public school were given little crescent moons to celebrate Ramadan or were given little statutes of Buddha to celebrate a Buddhist religious holiday. Neither one of these two scenarios would ever be tolerated among a lot of Christians, but these same Christians insist that their version of Christmas should be allowed to be celebrated in secular public schools.

But a candy cane was nothing of any religion. It's candy shaped like a cane.

"All hale Cane, all hale Cane." I suppose it does have a ring to it, but try fitting it into a robe, and crown.

How about letting students be a tad more free without all the trivial rules and regulations? I think school leaders can be too full of themselves and act like little dictators over things that don't really matter. My first "Aha!" experience upon arrival at college was that the petty rules of high school were gone, and students could still learn anyway. And a candy cane matters because?

Except for when a candy cane has had the name and story of Jesus Christ attached to it.

Excerpt from the article: Candy Canes at Christmas: Sometimes other Christian meanings are giving to the parts of the canes. The 'J' can also mean Jesus. The white of the cane can represent the purity of Jesus Christ and the red stripes are for the blood he shed when he died on the cross. The peppermint flavor can represent the hyssop plant that was used for purifying in the Bible.

I don't have a problem with that happening in a public school as long as there aren't any religious parents trying to impose their religious beliefs upon other people's children. And yes, I have had to deal with a couple of parents just like that when my older children were still in public school.
