Except for when a candy cane has had the name and story of Jesus Christ attached to it.

Excerpt from the article: Candy Canes at Christmas: Sometimes other Christian meanings are giving to the parts of the canes. The 'J' can also mean Jesus. The white of the cane can represent the purity of Jesus Christ and the red stripes are for the blood he shed when he died on the cross. The peppermint flavor can represent the hyssop plant that was used for purifying in the Bible.

And sometimes it's just a candy cane. And look at the way they hang, it's not like a J at all, it's like a, well...a cane.

Christ/blood are also symbolic...they going to ban that too? How about Lambs?

Petty and ridiculous.

I side with the Principle on this its a secular school there should be NOTHING of ANY religion done in school unless its topical in a class in an academic way year round. He is following the duty to keep the school neutral by not practicing a religious holiday.
Well he is actually a she.
What duty?
Practicing a religious holiday?
We are discussing candy canes , not "practicing" a holiday.

And what is really bizarre is that there are Christians who get upset about "Xmas".
Absolutely not bizarre in any way.
When one uses Xmas in a written form , they cross out Christ.
And seriously, is it that hard to actually spell Christmas without the abbreviation?

The principal banned candy canes because of the (debunked) urban legend that they are based on the letter J for Jesus, and that the red represents His blood. But then she also outlawed different colored candy canes? That never made sense. What if somebody brought in Y-shaped candy instead? Would she then argue that Y could stand for Yeshua, and we'd have the same problem?

Candy canes are secular in the first place, and she outlawed them as being "religious" because she didn't do her own homework. Possibly it's too strong a reaction to suspend her, but I can see a reprimand.

There is a strand of strict Christianity that objects to such abbreviations as Xmas (Christmas) and Xian (Christian) as profane or in some cases even Satanic. Nothing could be further from the truth. The X is the Greek letter Chi the first letter of Χριστός which translates into English as Christ. The use of X or Chi as a symbol for Christ goes back to the very early days of Christianity when the phrase "Iesous Xristos Theou Yios Sotare" was used as a sort of creed "Jesus Christ Son of God Savior". In capitol letters this abbreviates as ΙΧΘΥΣ in Greek or IXOYC in English. This acronym also spells the word "fish" in Greek, hence the use of the fish symbol as a secret recognition sign among Christians. There is absolutely no disrespect in using "Xmas" since the X as a symbol of the Christ has a long and honourable history.

Except there is no evidence that candy canes are shaped that was to represent Jesus. The shape was most likely to allow them to be hung on branches. Red and white are the usual colors for peppermint candy.

The principal has been placed on administrative leave.

An elementary school principal in Nebraska was suspended for telling teachers not to have "J" shaped candy canes decorating the classroom. Reason? The "J" looks like Jesus! Do you think she went through all other candies to make sure there was nothing else that might offend?

I wonder how much longer until a bank robber can hold up a bank with nothing more than offensive words.... maybe even a candy cane.

The fears of the past.... plagues, war, poverty.... fears of the present and future...... being offended....:muahah:

Regardless of education when people buy into an agenda they can convince themselves to do the most ludicrous things. Case in point.

Sssshhh...don't say that too loud! The same people might say you're right! Canes look like a "J" too so we need to ban them as well. Only walking sticks without a hook on the end are allowed!:help:
