  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

At this point, I would think Trump should scrub Kavenaugh and work to get someone else in. Maybe a woman. There's going to be an endless stream of accusations now that people know it's going to delay the vote. We need to get someone in before midterms.

If a blue wave happens, the Democrats will never confirm a conservative judge. They want a liberal judge in. This is why the left is doing everything they can to stall the confirmation, calling for FBI investigations, more delays, et cetera. I don't believe these accusations are true and there are plenty of holes in these stores. Out of four supposed witnesses, not a single one recalls this party or even Kavenaugh being a part of it it. But once the accusation has been made, that's going to taint him.

Feinstein had this letter from Ford since July. There's a reason why she held onto it for three months and pulled it out at the last second and calling for investigations. If they can delay the vote and cause enough doubt/confusion, then there won't be enough time for Trump to appoint someone else before midterms. It's all a political game.

There's nothing to investigate if there are no witnesses and Ford herself can't recall any details about this party other than Kavenaugh holding her down. Why should we waste time and money investigating something that can't be proven?

If Trump does that, he's surrendered his constitutional authority to the press. He didn't win the White House by backing down in the face of smears. The Senate Judiciary Committee simply has to grow a spine and say no more delays.

The SCOTUS justice is going to represent every one us, for the rest of his or her life. It shouldn't be rushed. Republicans refused to even given Garland a hearing, leaving the seat vacant for a long time, on account of how it was an election year & they thought folks should have the right to have a say in things.
We need to have some integrity.

I think you're right that Kavanaugh needs to be dropped. Not just these accusations, there's also other problems. If he stays on, there needs to be an investigation into the allegations. It's head up the rear end stupid to not go ahead & get the FBI investigating them now.

I think that if a judge hasn't been confirmed by election day it's going to incentivize a bunch of voters who might otherwise sit there on their butts. I know so many folks who voted for Trump in 2016 on account of how they were sticking to voting Republican, but have regretted that sorely. Especially our farmers who've felt stabbed in the back by him with the trade war crap. They detest him, detest some of the Republicans on the ballot in November. They'll still vote Republican purely on account of that seat. Trump will likely be dead in 10 years time or so, but whoever gets that seat will still be sitting in it. It's not about him.

The "movie deal" was a low-budget documentary.

And she's been a lawyer and a law professor for nearly 40 years. Even assuming your $2.5m figure is accurate (there's no source provided for that estimate), any sort of reasonable saving and investment plan would've garnered her at least that much at this stade of her career. I make a fraction of what a lawyer (or even a professor) does; I was broke for most of my 20s, and I'm still on track to have more than that at that age.
She’s been a famous lawyer and law professor.

She was a law professor before the hearings and continues to be a law professor today. She's written two books in the mean-time, which isn't that much for an academic. I'm not aware that her legal work has been very high profile.

Again, a $2.5m net worth (alleged) isn't that much for someone who's been a lawyer, or even "just" a professor for almost 40 years. She's been at Brandeis (in the western suburbs of Boston) for 20 years - with what property values are like out there, her house could easily account for half of that sum.

That would mean surrendering. Then what happens to the next person he tries to get confirmed? What prevents the same thing from happening again? And getting a woman is more of a political move to appease the liberals. If it were up to them, women would occupy every seat in the House, Senate, and would also be the president. They would also most likely be black or hispanic and have a story about being abused by a white man, would be lesbians, and believe America needs to stop trying so hard to be great.

I'm kind of shocked you're against Kavanaugh. He's a Bush guy. W came out recently and said he supports Kavenaugh and knows his character.

We shouldn't be trying to confirm a conservative judge or a liberal judge, but a good judge. If the Republicans are trying to confirm a judge because he will, say, vote to overturn Roe v. Wade they have surrendered their integrity from the get-go.

I think people who support Roe vs. Wade and abortion have no integrity to begin with, but that's another matter. If you want a good judge, Kavenaugh is probably one of the greatest judges to have ever been nominated. The problem is, the Democrats have promised they would prevent him from being nominated, no matter the cost. That apparently includes fake sexual assault allegations and smear campaigns.

I like President Bush, that doesn't mean he's always the best judge of character. Lots of folks have said that Jim Knoblach was an upstanding family man, he just quit his campaign race of accusations from his daughter that he molested her. I think the FBI needs to investigate the allegations against Kavanaugh.

He's already been cleared 6 times by the FBI during his career. He's also been questioned by the Senate for dozens of hours by the Senate during these hearings and answered 1200 written questions. When will it be enough?

We are talking about Trump. He had a reputation for being wealthy. Enough that the gold digger women would chase after him.

This thread is about Kavanaugh. Are you suggesting that Ford and now Ramirez are after his money...?

Perhaps he could restore some balance to the court by appointing a middle-of-the-road justice...like...ooh, Merrick Garland...?

It seems that that's the case already.

That's not clear. Jeff Flake has said pretty clearly that "If they push forward without any attempt with hearing what she's had to say, I'm not comfortable voting yes,"

And several other Republican senators have hemmed and hawed

she ever does testify:

There does seem to be a question, but that link is 5 days old. The story from a day ago is that she has agreed to appear in an open session on Thursday.
