  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

U.S. Immigration - WE are NOT the problem. Our policies are NOT the problem.

The REAL question should be WHY do the people that are FLEEING other countries want to LEAVE those countries. People should NOT want to leave a happy and prosperous country.

Help people where they are. People should NOT want to abandon their culture , their family and their nation. So, what then is the real issue.

In the case of the Central American refugees which has stirred up so much controversy about separating children, etc. they are fleeing to avoid the violence of ganglord-ridden failed states. Addressing the conditions in those countries is not part of the Right's game plan.

Has not been the left's game plan either but that does not address the real issue. Shouldn't they want to stay in their homelands if they were well functioning places to be ?

What gang lord infested states? I thought the United States was helping the Central American countries to be free democracies under Presidents Reagan and Bush in the 1980s-90s. Shirley you don’t mean to say we failed in Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Panama?

Blaming OUR leaders for what happens in OTHER countries is not right if it is NOT Caused by U.S. Involvement / outcome of U.S. Involvement.

A great deal of the mess in Central America is a result of our ham fisted interventions and our war on drugs.

I agree 100%. Just because the US helped to destabilize a country and created political upheaval and chaos, we should never be held accountable for the ensuing results. God knows we don’t want to be blamed for laying the ground work for Al-Queda, The Taliban, Daesh (ISIS), or the rise of the Ayatollah.

Preceded by a hundred years worth of ham-fisted interventions on behalf of US business interests.

I agree, effective US foreign policy has the potential to help people where they are.

In the case of Mexico and Central America the most recent core issues are:
- Violence
- Justice systems that are corrupt and rarely convict anyone

If you are a father of a 13 year old daughter and the local gang threatens her to become their "girlfriend" or else face execution, what would you do?

And btw, the United States citizens are indirectly contributing to the rampant violence across the region: Our illegal drug consumption is empowering criminal enterprises that simply overwhelm the local government's ability to keep their people safe. Every year, millions of dollars make their way into the hands of drug cartels and violent gangs. So yes, "we" are part of the problem.
