  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Does 1 Corinthians 4:6 prove sola scripture?

The Bible writers handed the writings and the Oral Tradition which is the Gospel of Jesus Christ to those they trained to feed the sheep when they had passed. They didn't hand anyone Sola Scripura.

Until you read what they wrote.

You would have found the words in the Bible to prove sola scriptura.

No - you have to find "scripture" in the Bible to support the teaching of "sola scriptura"

1 Cor 4:9
6 Now these things, brethren, I have figuratively applied to myself and Apollos for your sakes, so that in us you may learn not to exceed what is written, so that no one of you will become arrogant in behalf of one against the other.

Acts 17:11 "they studied the scriptures daily to see IF those things spoken to them by the Apostle Paul - were so"

Good luck with that.

Thanks! :)

"Sanctify them in Thy TRUTH -- Thy WORD is Truth" John 17:17

2 Peter 1:20-21 " 20 But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation, 21 for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God."

Notice how Jesus uses the term "Word of God" in this example?

Mark 7:6-13
6 And He said to them, “Rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written:
‘This people honors Me with their lips,
But their heart is far away from Me.
7 ‘But in vain do they worship Me,
Teaching as doctrines the precepts of men.’
8 Neglecting the commandment of God, you hold to the tradition of men.”
9 He was also saying to them, “You are experts at setting aside the commandment of God in order to keep your tradition. 10 For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘He who speaks evil of father or mother, is to be put to death’; 11 but you say, ‘If a man says to his father or his mother, whatever I have that would help you is Corban (that is to say, given to God),’ 12 you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or his mother; 13 thus invalidating the word of God by your tradition which you have handed down; and you do many things such as that.”

============================

1. The Bible is the Word of God.
2. The Word of God is the only infallible rule of faith and practice.

Thus... Isiah 8:20 "To the law and to the testimony if they speak not according to this word they have no light" is sola scriptura affirmed long before the NT.

But the way you use "alone" you defeat your own doctrine by eliminating all possibility of finding that doctrine in scripture.

If Isaiah had said "what is written scripture at this point alone - is the Word of God and the rule of faith" -- then not even the rest of Isaiah would be "valid" nor the remainder of the OT nor all the NT.

If the rule is used in Acts 17:11 "They studied the scriptures daily to SEE IF those things spoken to them by the Apostle Paul - were SO" but if you insert your wording into it -- then that text is saying that only the accepted scriptures as known at the writing of Acts 17:11 is the "Word of God" and only those texts are valid rules for testing faith, tradition and practice. Not the remainder of Acts not even the writings of the NT since the Bereans were surely not reading any NT texts while still non-Christian Jews.

There is no set number of books considered scripture in the churches. The 66 you refer to comes from those churches who accepted the opinion of the traditions of the Pharisees.

The 66 comes from those who believe the Hebrew Bible was written by Hebrews - not Catholics.

This particular point is very easy to get.

And? Just what does the tradition of the Pharisees have to do with the Christian Bible? Oh yeah, they decided to devise their own canon of the Jewish writings which removed several of the books which the Apostles handed to the Church, the Septuagint, and whom many Protestants embraced their traditions and followed suit and removed those books from their Bibles around 400 years ago.
Um, Jesus was talking about traditions that the "elders" introduced into the Jewish "Church", like washing hands, not the books of the Bible. And, nothing related to what was needed for salvation.
Yes, I would much rather trust the Oral Traditions handed down by the Apostles than those of the Pharisees.
You miss the concept that your Church assumes the place of where the Pharisees were. You made an argument that your Church had some special authority because they managed Scripture for a while. You fail to defend that what happened in the Pharisees could not happen to the Catholic Church.
Well, just what is believing in Christ? Do you follow all of the teachings handed down by the Apostles about how to follow Christ?
My question asked for something necessary for salvation that is not in scripture. To your question, I answer No. Do you really think I am going to miss salvation for not following your traditions?

No, incorrect since most Christians believe that, except for Luke, the biblical writers we're Hebrew. The NT writers we're also catholic and members of the Church founded by Jesus Christ.

The books which make up the NT were confirmed in the fourth century AD by Catholic Bishops. The OT books were those in the Septuagint which was what the Apostles used in their NT writings.

The Pharisees, the only remaining Jewish political faction after the destruction of the Temple, came together to decide Jewish canon. Those books plus the Catholic NT canon make up the 66 books of many Protestant Bibles.

Why then do Catholics seem to dislike Sola scripture?

Because they want to put their traditions on the same level as the scriptures and put the Pope above that

Yes it does, as well as these scriptures:

2 Timothy 3:16-17

16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

17 That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

Um, Jesus was talking about traditions that the "elders" introduced into the Jewish "Church", like washing hands, not the books of the Bible. And, nothing related to what was needed for salvation.
Then why did you say that to my quote that you highlighted, (Below), which clearly was about our Bible?
Why do you know that scripture is unquestionably true? Who gave you the books which most call scripture today?
If you doubt those that came together to choose the writings which make up most Christian Bibles, then why do you trust those writings?

You miss the concept that your Church assumes the place of where the Pharisees were. You made an argument that your Church had some special authority because they managed Scripture for a while. You fail to defend that what happened in the Pharisees could not happen to the Catholic Church.
Please show exactly where this argument occurred.
My question asked for something necessary for salvation that is not in scripture. To your question, I answer No. Do you really think I am going to miss salvation for not following your traditions?
Where have I insinuated that you would? You will be judged by your faith and actions, not mine or Catholics, Orthodox, Baptists, Lutherans, etc...

Why then do Catholics seem to dislike Sola scripture?
It's a doctrine which is practically imperceptible in the historical record prior to Luther, it runs contrary to the norms and preferences of the ancient world, the Church herself wrote the New Testament so it's kind of strange to think that the New Testament sets the limits of her authority, etc. Communions which diverged from the Catholic Church early on (ie, the Orthodox Church) don't gravitate toward "sola scriptura" either.

Taken together, the number of Christians around the world who subscribe to "sola scriptura" is quite small. The vast majority of Christians worldwide hold to something different, and have ever since they began.

1 Corinthians 4:6 Now these things, brethren, I have figuratively transferred to myself and Apollos for your sakes, that you may learn in us not to think beyond what is written, that none of you may be puffed up on behalf of on the against the other.
No it doesn't prove sola scriptura. There is no evidence this passage is referring to Scripture at all. It doesn't use the Greek word "graphē" which is translated as Scripture. It doesn't use the word "logos" -- the Word. It does not identify the object of what is 'written' as being Scripture at all.

In context, this verse has nothing to do with authority or discerning correct teaching. It's about who is saved, and who is not. " 3 But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged by you or by any human court. I do not even judge myself. 4 I am not aware of anything against myself, but I am not thereby acquitted. It is the Lord who judges me. 5 Therefore do not pronounce judgment before the time, before the Lord comes, who will bring to light the things now hidden in darkness and will disclose the purposes of the heart. Then every man will receive his commendation from God. 6 I have applied all this to myself and Apol′los for your benefit, brethren, that you may learn by us not to go beyond what is written, that none of you may be puffed up in favor of one against another. "

It's evident that believers are getting all puffed up over who is saved, and who is not, and what sort of 'rewards' they will be receiving from God. Paul reminds them that he does not even judge himself (much less others) because his personal profession of his own salvation is meaningless because it will be Christ who judges him (and all of us). Not going 'beyond what is written' is synonymous with not pronouncing judgement before the time in Paul's text.

People overlook that there is another book mentioned in Scripture -- one that directly relates to this topic of the revelation of who is saved and who is not -- the Lamb's book of Life. Rev 20:12 -- "Also another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, by what they had done." (also Philippians 4:3, Revelation 3:5,13:8, 17:8, 20:15, 21:27). According to Paul, stop going beyond what is written, stop judging things before their time, when the Lord comes he will reveal all based upon what is written in the book of life.

This passage has nothing to do with Scripture at all.
