1 John 3:9 says very plainly, Whosoever is born of God (saved by grace) doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.

Consider the statement, "I am a sinner saved by grace" in light of the ten commandments.

You might be saying that:

1. I am unfaithful to God, and saved by grace.

2. I am an idol-maker and worshipper, and saved by grace.

3. I take the name of the LORD in vain, and am guiltless (saved by grace).

4. I violate the sabbath, and am saved by grace.

5. I dishonour my father and mother, and am saved by grace.

6. I am an adulterer, and saved by grace.

7. I am a thief, and saved by grace.

8. I am a murderer, and saved by grace.

9. I am a liar, and lie with the intent of hurting my neighbor, and am saved by grace.

10. I am covetous, and saved by grace.

Some of these things have specific statements in the New Testament that if you do such things you will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Paul in 1 Timothy 1:15 says, This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.

So if you are going to call yourself a sinner saved by grace, go the whole way and call yourself the CHIEF OF SINNERS.

And realize also that Paul was referring to his past in context (1 Timothy 1:13), though he used the word "am" in the present tense in 1 Timothy 1:15. He said that he was currently the chief of sinners because he was FORMERLY a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious. So if I call myself the chief of sinners, it should be in the same sense that an alcoholic who has been clean and sober for 35 years still calls himself an alcoholic.

Of course concerning commandment #4 our Lord Jesus has qualified obedience to the sabbath day commandment by telling us that it is lawful to do well on the sabbath; but to violate the sabbath by not consecrating a day of the week to worshipping the Lord would also be a sin in my book.

If a person stubbornly persists in their sin, they will experience the consequences of their sin, certainly.

I've never met a perfect and sinless person. I've met those claiming to that way, but that boast was just a deceptive display of pride.
But when we repent of our sin, our worries disappear.

If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
We've all sinned. Why would we continue to disobey the Lord's commandments?

Yes, an unrepentant heart will lead to the second death.

But the amazing grace is just as 1 John shows us in chapter 1 -- that we can be forgiven and cleansed as we confess.

Thus Peter, even after doing wrong, could be forgiven and cleansed and restored.

When we read Galatians chapter 2, even as Peter, the same Peter with faith through whom God had raised a dead girl, even this very same Peter "stood condemend" by his profound wrong action....yet it was not the end.

He could turn, and confess his wrong to God, and thus repent.

So can you and I.

But, yes, one must indeed continue to follow, continue to confess as needed when we stumble -- the prodigal must answer the call inside to turn, and repent. When he does turn, then he will be restored. True repentance (that is real) leads to true change.

1 John is such a powerful and helpful epistle, and all Christians should take time to read through it fully, and digest all they read. In the above and this post, we've only given a small part of all it has to teach us!

Ephesians 2:5, 8
even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),
For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that (faith) not of yourselves, it is the gift of God;

SALVATION offered by Jesus - PAST completed TENSE! (AORIST!)

God does not take back nor allow man to give back His SALVATION...PAST completed TENSE! (AORIST!)

John 5:24 (all NASB) “Truly, truly, I (Jesus) say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, HAS eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but HAS PASSED out of death into life.

Luke 19:1-10...[ Zaccheus Converted ]
9 And Jesus said to him,
“Today salvation has come to this house, because he, too, is a son of Abraham.
10 For the Son of Man "has come" to seek and to save that which was lost.”

Mark 2:17
And hearing this, Jesus said to them,
“It is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick;
I did not "come to call" the righteous, but sinners.”

John 3
17 For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world,
but that the world might "be saved" through Him.
18 He who believes in Him is not judged;
he who does not believe has been judged already,
because he "has not believed" in the name of the ONLY begotten Son of God.

John 6
35 Jesus said to them,
“I am the bread of life;
he who COMES to Me WILL not hunger,
and he who BELIEVES in Me WILL never thirst.
36 But I said to you that you have SEEN Me, and yet do not BELIEVE.
40 For this is the will of My Father,
that everyone who beholds the Son and BELIEVES in Him "WILL (is certain to) have "eternal life"",
and I Myself will raise him up "on the last day".”

John 10
27 My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me;
28 and I "GIVE eternal life to them", and they will never perish;
and no one will snatch them out of My hand.
29 My Father, who HAS GIVEN them to Me, is greater than all;
and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand.
30 I and the Father are one.” (IN SPIRITUAL ESSENCE AND NATURE!)

John 17:2-3 ...Jesus' High Priestly Prayer to the Father about Jesus' followers
even as You gave Him authority over all flesh,
that to all whom You "have given" Him,
He MAY GIVE "eternal life".
This is "eternal life",
that they MAY KNOW You, the only true God, and
(KNOW) Jesus Christ whom You have sent.

John 1:12,14 (NIV)
Yet to all who "RECEIVED" him,
to those who "BELIEVED" in His name, (Jesus the Christ)He gave the right to become
"CHILDREN of God"...

OP The echo in Heaven will be deafening.

I am saved by grace. If I were saved by being totally righteous than why would I need grace? Believe me... I need it!

I'm sorry, I will try hard to do better, please God forgive me. That's the opening line to my prayers... Always. God loves me and I will be with him in Heaven ( if he ever decides to take me) not because of who I am but because of who he is! God grace will suffice.

1 John 3 (NASB)...Believing "Children of God": Love "One Another" (CONTEXT!)

1 See how great a love the Father has bestowed on us, that we would be called "children of God"; and such we are.
For this reason the world does not know us, because it did not know Him.
2 Beloved, now we are children of God, and it has not appeared as yet what we WILL be.
We know that when He appears, we will be LIKE Him, because we will see Him just as He is.
3 And everyone who has this hope fixed on Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.

4 Everyone who PRACTICES sin also practices lawlessness; and sin is lawlessness.
5 You know that He appeared in order to take away sins; and in Him there is no sin.
6 No one who ABIDES (DWELLS) in Him sins;
no one who (practices) sin has seen Him or knows Him.
7 Little children, make sure no one deceives you;
the one who PRACTICES righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous;
8 the one who PRACTICES sin is of the devil;
for the devil has sinned from the beginning.
The Son of God appeared for this purpose, to destroy the works of the devil.
>>9 No one who is born of God PRACTICES sin, because His seed ABIDES (DWELLS) in him;
and he cannot sin (IN THE EYES OF GOD), because he is born of God.<<
10 By this the children of God and the children of the devil are obvious:
anyone who does not PRACTICE righteousness is not of God, nor the one who does not love his brother.

11 For this is the message which you have heard from the beginning, that we should love "one another"(BELIEVING BRETHREN);
12 not as Cain, who was of the evil one and slew his brother. And for what reason did he slay him? Because his deeds were evil, and his brother’s were righteous.

13 Do not be surprised, brethren, if the world hates you.
14 We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brethren.
He who does not love (the brethren) ABIDES (DWELLS) in death.
15 Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer;
and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him. 1
6 We know love by this,
that He laid down His life for us;
and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.
17 But whoever has the world’s goods, and sees his brother in need and closes his heart against him,
how does the love of God abide in him?
18 Little children, let us not love with word or with tongue, but in deed and truth.
19 We will know by this that we are of the truth, and will assure our heart before Him
20 in whatever our heart condemns us;
for God is greater than our heart and knows all things.
21 Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence before God;
22 and whatever we ask we receive from Him,
because we keep His commandments and do the things that are pleasing in His sight.

23 This is His commandment, that we believe in the name of His Son Jesus Christ,
and love one another, just as He commanded us.
24 The one who keeps His commandments ABIDES (DWELLS) in Him,
and He in him.
We know by this that He abides in us,
by the Spirit whom He has given us.

who abides...GREEK 3306...menō...(ONLY John uses this word!)
I.to remain, abide (DWELL)
A.in reference to PLACE
i.to sojourn, tarry
ii.not to depart
a.to continue to be present
b.to be held, kept, continually
B.in reference to TIME
i.to continue to be, not to perish, to last, endure
a.of persons, to survive, live
C.in reference to STATE or condition
i.to remain as one, not to become another or different

What if he is suggesting that you able to not sin after you have received the power from on high? as opposed to making yourself perfect before receiving the gift.

What does it mean to you to "Be Ye perfect?"

Looks like nobody's saved by grace then. Welp, so much for the Gospel--guess we can all find some other religion now.

This is a matter one has to decide for themselves. E.g. You can't say that just because you are a sinner, everyone else is as well....or that if you can't stop sinning, No one can.

If you have concluded this for yourself, this is fine.....but let every other man be persuaded in his own heart as well.

You go ahead and be prefect.. Good luck with that.

Me... I will do the best I can each moment of my walk with Christ. When I stumble I will reach for my Saviour to pull me up and continue to walk with me. I will never stop trying

I am perfectly human saved by grace through faith and trust in my Lord.

It seems too difficult to try and memorize all of the things we should not do and use that as a litmus for our salvation. We are certain to fail on at least a few of those. Nobody is exempted.

Rather, we should look at the commands of Jesus (Matthew 5 & 6) and see if we are doing those things to decide if we are truly God's child.

Also, we are told how we can know if we or someone else is righteous or not.
The fruit in their lives. God's children daily experience peace, joy, meekness, temperance, graciousness, kindness, gentleness, generosity, forgiveness, self control, ect.
Those who are not walking according to the spirit will daily experience fear, anxiety, jealousy, hatred, lust, greed, insensitivity, ect.

What is really vexing about that is that I see both types of folks IN the church and among the "non-religious unchurched".
