  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The prophecy in Daniel 7:25 states that the little horn power will think to change the times and laws.

From "Antiquities of the Jews" by Josephus, Book 12, chapter 7

"6. When therefore the generals of Antiochus's armies had been beaten so often, Judas assembled the people together, and told them, that after these many victories which God had given them, they ought to go up to Jerusalem, and purify the temple, and offer the appointed sacrifices. But as soon as he, with the whole multitude, was come to Jerusalem, and found the temple deserted, and its gates burnt down, and plants growing in the temple of their own accord, on account of its desertion, he and those that were with him began to lament, and were quite confounded at the sight of the temple; so he chose out some of his soldiers, and gave them order to fight against those guards that were in the citadel, until he should have purified the temple. When therefore he had carefully purged it, and had brought in new vessels, the candlestick, the table [of shew-bread], and the altar [of incense], which were made of gold, he hung up the veils at the gates, and added doors to them. He also took down the altar [of burnt-offering], and built a new one of stones that he gathered together, and not of such as were hewn with iron tools. So on the five and twentieth day of the month Casleu, which the Macedonians call Apeliens, they lighted the lamps that were on the candlestick, and offered incense upon the altar [of incense], and laid the loaves upon the table [of shew-bread], and offered burnt-offerings upon the new altar [of burnt-offering]. Now it so fell out, that these things were done on the very same day on which their Divine worship had fallen off, and was reduced to a profane and common use, after three years' time; for so it was, that the temple was made desolate by Antiochus, and so continued for three years. This desolation happened to the temple in the hundred forty and fifth year, on the twenty-fifth day of the month Apeliens, and on the hundred fifty and third olympiad: but it was dedicated anew, on the same day, the twenty-fifth of the month Apeliens, on the hundred and forty-eighth year, and on the hundred and fifty-fourth olympiad. And this desolation came to pass according to the prophecy of Daniel, which was given four hundred and eight years before; for he declared that the Macedonians would dissolve that worship [for some time].

7. Now Judas celebrated the festival of the restoration of the sacrifices of the temple for eight days, and omitted no sort of pleasures thereon; but he feasted them upon very rich and splendid sacrifices; and he honored God, and delighted them by hymns and psalms. Nay, they were so very glad at the revival of their customs, when, after a long time of intermission, they unexpectedly had regained the freedom of their worship, that they made it a law for their posterity, that they should keep a festival, on account of the restoration of their temple worship, for eight days. And from that time to this we celebrate this festival, and call it Lights. I suppose the reason was, because this liberty beyond our hopes appeared to us; and that thence was the name given to that festival. Judas also rebuilt the walls round about the city, and reared towers of great height against the incursions of enemies, and set guards therein. He also fortified the city Bethsura, that it might serve as a citadel against any distresses that might come from our enemies. "

Josephus confirms above the understanding of the Jews of his time, who knew that Daniel had predicted the events of 167 BC, by Antiochus Epiphanes.
Josephus confirms it as a historical fact.

John 10:22 is a reference to the celebration of Hanukkah each year by the Jews of Jesus time.

Antiochus not only stopped the temple sacrifices for about 3 years, but also forbid the Jews to circumcise their children.
He attempted to convert them to the culture of the Greeks during this time.

This was part of Daniel's prophecy but Antiochus does not fit all the requirements of the little horn power like the papacy does and like the first beast of Revelation does.

According to a self-consistent Preterist interpretation,

7-headed scarlet red beast with iron teeth & bronze claws = pagan Roman empire with red-clad legions wielding iron swords & bronze spears

7 heads = Julio-Claudian dynasty (Caesar / Augustus / Tiberius / Caligula / Claudius / Nero / Galba)
6th head = Nero = 666

10 horns each ruling for "one hour" = remaining pagan imperial dynasties (e.g. Flavian, Antonine)
little horn "humbling 3" who afflicts the Saints = Diocletian, infamous instigator of the Diocletianic Persecution, who forced Egypt to give up its then 4000 year old calendar, and adopt the Roman one:

Calendar era - Wikipedia
The Era of Martyrs or Era of Diocletian is reckoned from the beginning of the reign of Roman Emperor Diocletian; the first year of this era was 284/5. It was not the custom to use regnal years in Rome, but it was the custom in Roman Egypt, which the emperor ruled through a prefect (the king of Egypt). The year number changed on the first day of the Egyptian month Thoth (29 August three years out of four, 30 August the year before a Roman leap year.) Diocletian abolished the special status of Egypt, which thereafter followed the normal Roman calendar: consular years beginning on 1 January. This era was used in the Easter tables prepared in Alexandria long after the abdication of Diocletian, even though Diocletian was a notorious persecutor of Christians. The Era of Diocletian was retained by the Coptic Church and used for general purposes, but by 643 the name had been changed to Era of the Martyrs.

Second Coming Event (Rev 19) manifested in Constantine who defeated the forces persecuting Christians

Millennium = Byzantine empire
End Times = 15th century AD to present

Did the Papacy come out of Greece, and did it divide into four parts as did the kingdom of Alexander and his four generals?

Dan 8:21 And the male goat is the kingdom of Greece. The large horn that is between its eyes is the first king.
Dan 8:22 As for the broken horn and the four that stood up in its place, four kingdoms shall arise out of that nation, but not with its power.

No, that's Daniel's prophecy related to Greece and Alexander the Great. The little horn power comes after the Greek and Roman powers and is unlike the other powers.

Did Antiochus Epiphanes come out of one of those four?

The five major powers are Babylon, Media-Persia, Greek, Pagan Rome, and the papacy. Antiochus Epiphanes is one of the kings of the north who lived long before the creation of the papacy.

The papacy doesn't fit zilch for requirements. I can't figure it out. Not one verse of end-time prophecy points to Rome yet people are so indoctrinated by the teaching they can't break away from it. They even try to MIX Rome and Islam which is just nonsense.
The Reformers knew otherwise. Right to the death.

Have a read in "Foxe's Book of Martyrs". You might be enlightened.

With Revelation you have to understand the symbols which are available on the web if that's what you are struggling with.

There are many good commentaries on this if you want to further understand the prophecies of Daniel and Revelation.

The reformers got it wrong because they were looking at what was going on around them and not the distant furure. They should have known better but it seems the Crusades which lasted for centuries wasn't enough for them to let go of those prejudices. They believed Rome was the culprit because they crucified Christ, destroyed the Temple and persecuted Christians during the inquisition, etc. But Roman Catholics were the bulk of the force that helped keep Islam in check especially in Europe over the centuries.

Many today are still convinced that Rome and the EU or a "Revived Roman Empire," will emerge in the end. The reformers were unforgiving and more in tune with their prejudism's than correctly interpreting the scriptures. In my view, the reformation did more harm than good.
What would be the rationale for looking at the future when you were living (and dying) right on the receiving end of the fulfillments, with 1000 accumulated years of historical fulfillment hindsight as well?

Many today are still convinced that Rome and the EU or a "Revived Roman Empire," will emerge in the end.
No genuine historicist has ever promoted such. The kingdoms associated with the horns of Daniel 7 are all readily historically identifiable.

In my view, the reformation did more harm than good.
None of us would be here without it.

Futurism fantasizes. History realizes.

The papacy is just as bad now as they ever were. They still have the Jesuits countering the reformation. They operate very secretly.

According to my Preterist interpretation, 1500 AD marked the end of the Millennium and onset of the End Times (Rev 20:7), "right on schedule" at the beginning of the "8th Biblical Day" (=8th millennium) from Creation around 5500 BC. According to the Secrets of Enoch (33:1),

And I appointed the eighth day also, that the eighth day should be the first-created after my work, and that (the first seven) revolve in the form of the seventh thousand, and that at the beginning of the eighth thousand there should be a time of not-counting, endless, with neither years nor months nor weeks nor days nor hours.

I perceive the 16th century AD Gregorian calendar reform to be "right on schedule" and fulfill that Prophesy, as there were 11 days "skipped" which were not counted, in any year / month / week / day / hour.

Prima facie, human history on earth has been "railed" onto a "scheduled Prophetic itinerary" for 7500 years. "God in heaven" can accurately "shot call" human history down on earth 500 to 2000 years in advance, with a precision of at worst a year or two every few centuries.

Insofar as no Scripture makes mention of any "9th Biblical Day", so I would wager that Judgement Day (Rev 20:10 = 2 Pet 3:10) will occur between now (= Biblical Day count 7.5) and ~2500 AD (= Biblical Day count 8.0).
