  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

This rest isn't the 7th day sabbath. Sabbath keepers were offer this rest even though they kept the sabbath. Why or how could this be done if they had this rest in keeping the 7th day?

The point of the chapter is that keeping the day while breaking God’s Law or not following or believing God, and you will not enter into God’s promised rest if you do not believe God's Word and follow it.

What works are you talking about? There wasn't any physical labor on God's part in creation. God spoke things into physical manifestations. The exception is man.

It is Hebrews 4:10. No one said that God did any physical labor. God’s Work indeed was through His Word and that is how God works (Genesis 2:1-3). We cease our work as God ceased his work of creation according to God’s 4th commandment (Exodus 20:8-11) by believing and following God.

* We should labour to enter into God’s rest (Gen 2:1-3) faith in God’s Word (rest through believing God) v11
This doesn't imply working for rest.

No one is working for rest. It is about believing and following God's Word

Please go back and look at the Greek meaning of the word "rest" used in Heb 4:9 its meaning is resting through keeping of a Sabbath or Sabbath observance. (I have provided Greek links below)

“There remaineth therefore a [Sabbath] rest 4520 to the people of God.” (NAS; Heb 4:9)
The Greek word literally means “Sabbath keeping” or “Sabbath observance.” (links below)
Strong's Concordance 4520
sabbatismos:
a sabbath rest
Original Word: σαββατισμός, οῦ, ὁ
Part of Speech: Noun, Masculine
Transliteration: sabbatismos
Phonetic Spelling: (sab-bat-is-mos')
Short Definition: a Sabbath rest
Definition: a keeping of the Sabbath, a Sabbath rest.

Strong's Greek 4520

σαββατισμὸς — 1 Occ.
Hebrews 4:9N-NMS
GRK: ἄρα ἀπολείπεται σαββατισμὸς τῷ λαῷ
NAS: there remains a Sabbath rest for the people
KJV: therefore a rest to the people
INT: Then remains a sabbath rest to the people

Thayer's Greek Lexicon
STRONGS NT 4520: σαββατισμός

σαββατισμός, σαββατισμου, ὁ (σαββατίζω to keep the sabbath); 1. a keeping sabbath. 2. the blessed rest from toils and troubles looked for in the age to come by the true worshippers of God and true Christians (R. V. sabbath rest): Hebrews 4:9. (Plutarch, de superstit. c. 3; ecclesiastical writings.)

There's no word rest in the Greek found in verse 9. Verse 11 does have the word rest in the Greek. You're intentionally misleading.
Maybe you need to look again it is right in front of you (you quoted the Greek above from the concordance and lexicon of the word “rest” used in Hebrews 4:9

Hebrews 4:9, There remaineth therefore a “rest” to the people of God. The word “rest” used here means a keeping of a Sabbath. The NAS version of the bible actually translates Hebrews 4:9 as; “There remaineth therefore a [Sabbath] rest (4520) to the people of God.”

I accept you as a Christian:)
Don't forget. There were believers in Acts who wanted gentile converts to be circumcised and obey the entire law(Acts15:5) And then there was Paul!
It was a very broad church!

Thank you. I accept you as a Christian as well.

Hi Friend,

I do not think anyone is proposing that anyone is saved by keeping God's commandments. Simply if you love Jesus he will change your heart to follow him. This is the New Covenant (Eze 36:26-27; Heb 8:10-12). This includes the 7th Day Sabbath which is one of the 10.

In Christ!

I believe those verses include the Sabbath as well.

Hi DarylFawcett
Nice to meet you.
How do you all understand the following???
Acts 5:32 ESV And we are witnesses to these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him."

I think that is actually a very good question. My understanding is as we believe God's Word he gives us power to obey him and follow Him (2 Peter 1:3-4)

I interpret it as obeying the commandments of God and we will follow Him.

And you referenced Matthew 11:28-30.

Indeed. Christ set an example of obedience to the Law and he was inviting people to be followers of his example and saying that this is the way where we will find rest for our souls in reference to Jeremiah 6:16-19.

In Acts ch8 we read people in Samaria accepted the word and were baptised, they became believers. You cannot be a Christian unless the holy spirit dwells in you( rom8:9) .but, Peter and John went to visit them and when they laid hands in them the people of Samaria received the holy spirit.
Safe to assume that Phillip did not leave the people in an unsaved state, therefore the holy spirit was in them already. Therefore, biblically speaking there are two separate experiences. The holy spirit entering your life at conversion, and the receiving of the holy spirit, as they did at Samaria for example. Confusing? Not to an evangelical!

Obedience comes from faith( rom1:5)

The law is not based on faith( gal5:12)

There are two types of believers. Those who look to the written code in order to seek to obey, and those who look away from it and to Christ, in order to seek to obey.

But now, by dying to what once bound us we have been released from the law so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not the old way of the written code
Rom7:6

There are two types of believers.
Those who understand the full demands if Gods laws, the pristine level they are set at, and those who appear not to.

The type who believe they obey the TC, don't understand the pristene level the law is set at. And, one has to wonder why they do not add the second greatest commandment to the ten when they say you are only in a saved state if you obey the TC. For the second greatest commandment supercedes nine if the TC.
Still, if you don't understand the full magnitude of what is involved in obeying the TC, I guess it fits more easily to say:
Obey the TC to be in a saved state

Paul of course did fully understand what was involved in obeying the TC, his eyes were fully open. That is why he referred to the TC as the letter that kills and the ministry of death and condemnation. No one knew the law better than Paul!
And because he knew the letter of the TC killed, he was so in earnest that you must die to the law in order to live for God.
You must follow after the holy spirit, not the written code. Those who follow after the written code cannot fully understand the message, for they are not following after the holy spirit. And Paul tells us it is one or the other. And if you don't follow after the holy spirit you are not being led by the Spirit of truth, and only he can lead you into truth concerning the true spiritual message contained in the letter. Without his leading, all you are left with is a shallow/ superfluous understanding of the letter. You never will truly understand the gospel message in its fulness.

So my brothers, you also died to the law through the body if Christ that you might belong to another, to him who was raised from the dead in order that we might bear fruit for God
For when we were controlled by the sinfull nature, the sinfull passions aroused by the law were at work in our bodies bringing forth fruit for death
But now, by dying to what once bound us we have been released from the law, so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, not the old way of the written code
Rom7:4-6

WHICH LAW us Paul referring to in the above?
In the next five verses he gives a personal example from his own life as to why he had to die to the law. The example he gave was: Thou shalt not covet, one of the TC

It is impossible to understand Pauls message through the natural intellect. It is a spiritual message only understood through the enlightenment of the Holy Spirit, hence so many shun, or neglect to consider much if what Paul wrote.
A message that states. Die to the law and sin shall not be your master, cannot be fully comprehended by the natural intellect. So it often gets ignored.
And people keep looking to the law, and trying their best to obey it to please God. For the sincere, honest and humble this leaves them much troubled. For they know how short they fall in obedience to it

LGW believes you can only be in a saved state if you obey the TC.
If anyone believes God desires them to look to the TC and do their best to obey them, in the real world they will judge their salvation on obeying the TC. For no one has a licence to sin
