• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

So my friend told me that he has a form of OCD called hocd which apparently makes people afraid that they might be gay even though they know that they are not gay. Today I heard something saying that homosexuality is not the same as being gay. They say that being gay is accepting homosexuality, and that homosexuality is thoughts or something I don't know. But my question is the way they described homosexuality sounds like the intrusive thoughts that he suffers with if anyone knows a lot between the two please help me. I'm afraid that he might not know that he is suffering with homosexuality. I really hope that he isn't though but I need to know because I used to suffer with the same fear. I also should mention that I know I am a Christian and I know that you can't have homosexuality and be a Christian because it goes against what God says. But hocd is the fear that you are gay even though you know that you were never gay before and you know that it is wrong it's just like one of those "what of" things. I just want to know if hocd is homosexuality

It's just OCD. The theme HOCD (or Sexual Orientation OCD because even gay can be afraid of being straight) has nothing to with being gay. It's intrusive thoughts. Thoughts that are unwanted and cause a great deal of distress, ruminating, and reassurance seeking. These thoughts are not enjoyable to the person having them (although the person suffering can get stuck in a loop of asking 'How do I know I don't really enjoy these thoughts?' that's still OCD) and that's the difference.

Thank you so much! I cried out to God asking him to answer my questions saying "Lord help me as I cry out to you." And low and behold you answered my question. God is good forever and ever! But one last question: is hocd sexually immoral? I mean I use to fantasize about having sex with a woman to try to get rid of the fear but it only made the anxiety worse. This was sexually immoral and I have since stopped it, but is hocd all together sexually immoral? Thanks!

I don't think HOCD is immoral at all, just the way I don't think that an obsession about blaspheming God means you have actually blasphemed Him. No matter what the obsession is, you respond to it in the same way: you recognize it as unwanted (even if you don't FEEL that it is unwanted), you acknowledge that it is just a thought and has no power over you, and you move on with your daily life, without giving into ruminating or other compulsions. Here's a website that has some great resources about HOCD:
Welcome
