God is only concerned with how you act given your circumstances.

An angel from God appeared before Gideon and reminded him that God was with him. So Gideon’s question was, If God is with us, why are we under bondage to the Midianites?

I think the first step of Gideon is very meaningful. He is sorry because of the rule of Madianites, but he does not take action just based on his feelings. First, he asks God: why? how? There is prayer and offer. Only after these Gideon acts, because now he understands God's will. He will act - and win - both against the Madianites, so that they will no longer rule over the Israelites, and against his fellow Israelites, so that they will stop worship to Baal and other false gods.
