I've gravely offended God this morning! Please pray that I make it to confession this week, confess my sins well, with compunction and perfect contrition. And that I make a firm resolve to sin no more.

Breathe. Then get to confession. Then find some joy in being an adopted child of God the Father. Breathe that in.

I thought the only unforgivable sin was blasphemy against the Holy Spurit which we can't even do.
A mortal sin, is not an unforgivable sin, it's just that, you need to go to confession to get it forgiven.

JesusLovesOurLady -

Can you explain in a little more detail the nature of the prayers you are requesting from others? Like, are you asking other people to ask god to help guide you to confession? Are you asking other people to ask god to help you confess your sins well, with compunction and with perfect <you feeling genuinely sorry>? Are you asking other people to ask god to help you decide to want to not sin anymore?

I've been trying to understand what prayer is and a bit more detail from you on what you are asking for in this thread may help me.

I'm asking for several things:

1. That I actually make to confession. That I don't die in a car crash on the way to confession, and that nothings happens to prevent confession from being available.

2. That I confess my sins purely because they offend God, not because I'm scared of going to hell, although, that is sufficient for the removal of mortal sins. Ideally, one should repent of, and avoid sin, purely because it offends God.

3. That I have the desire to never sin again, this is closely related to (2), and for my asking for compunction. I want to have the grace to be really sorry for my sins, and thus have the desire to never do it again because I am so sorry over it.

I don't understand why you can't just confess to God now and be forgiven why must a man do it for you? I mean I know confessing to those around you who can support you and hold you accountable is incredibly helpful but still even though I try to respect the different convictions we have I still can't let go of wanting to understand the different mindsets lol.
One thing about the Catholic understanding of Good Works:
Because we Catholics believe, that we can't earn are way to Heaven, but must work in union with Christ for salvation. When someone does a good work in a state of mortal sin, that work is utterly meritless in the eyes of God! Because of this, and I hope you don't take it in the wrong way, I won't explain the sacrament of confession to you, until after I've confessed my mortal sin. Although some of my fellow Catholics have already explained a bit to you, I hope more join in as well.

So I guess the point of involving other people in praying to god is to help inform god of your intentions of confessing, or to involve other people to help convince god to act in a way to ensure that nothing prevents confession from being available to you?

2. That I confess my sins purely because they offend God, not because I'm scared of going to hell, although, that is sufficient for the removal of mortal sins. Ideally, one should repent of, and avoid sin, purely because it offends God.
Describe how you imagine these other people pray for this.

"God, please transform JesusLovesOurLady's heart so that he may genuinely want to repent."
"God, just to let you know, JesusLovesOurLady genuinely wants to be genuinely remorseful."

3. That I have the desire to never sin again, this is closely related to (2), and for my asking for compunction. I want to have the grace to be really sorry for my sins, and thus have the desire to never do it again because I am so sorry over it.
Same as above, please describe how you imagine these other people pray for this.

"God, please transform JesusLovesOurLady's heart so that he may desire to never sin again."
"God, just to let you know, JesusLovesOurLady genuinely wants to genuinely desire never to sin again."

I legitimately do not understand the purpose of asking other people to pray to god on your behalf in this regard. Either it is to "get enough signatures on the petition" to convince god to act and behave in some way, or it is to ensure god is well informed regarding your intentions. I'm not seeing any other way it makes sense to ask other people to pray for you in this regard.

I like to think of it in this way. Confession is the ordinary way in which our Lord gave us to have our sins forgiven and that we would know, for sure, that they are forgiven. To put it another way, I would prefer to confess my sins to a the Lord's minister and have him proclaim the Lord's forgiveness over me, than confessing directly to God and then proclaiming his forgiveness over myself.

More this, than the other. I'll go into more detail on your questions later. Maybe a fellow Catholic will help.

I think you're already well on your way.

You know that I'm praying for you.

I hope so!

It's often been said that having these kind of thoughts is evidence that grace is already in action.

God bless you, and I pray you make it to confession.
