Have any favorite songs that express your love for Jesus? I was listening to this CD again for the first time in a while when this song came on and I realized how much I missed it. Then it dawned on me why. A lot of songs written about Him, just not always a lot that are written and sung to Him.

Special thanks to a close friend, who inspires me to give my heart and life to Him more every day.

Songs by Switchfoot remind me of how God loves us. Here is a beautiful one.

The whole thing pretty much, but Mi Universo especially. I can listen to a lot of heart-felt music and not come apart, but I have never listened to this song once without completely coming to tears (6:10). Translation provided below.

Mi Universo
Jesus Adrian Romero
Be my universe
I don't want to give You just a little bit of my time
I don't want to separate out a day only
Be my universe
I don't want to give You my words like drops
I want a deluge of praise in my mouth

(Chorus):
Be my universe
Be everything that I feel, and that I think
Be my first breath in the morning, and the light in my window
Be my universe
Fill each of my thoughts
Your presence and your power will be my food,
Oh Jesus is my desire

Be my universe
I don't want to give you only part of my years
I want you to own my time, and my space
Be my universe
I don't want to do my will, I want to please You
And each dream that there is in me, I want to give to you

(Chorus)///

Be my universe

The OP is totally right. Most modern praise music is very much people centred. Look at the words of Ten Thousand reasons and its very clear the nearly all of the sing is written with the words of the chorus to be sung to your own soul as the singer and not to God. And the words which are written to be sung to God are descriptive and no more.

Heres the chorus:
Bless the Lord O my soul
O my soul
Worship His Holy name
Sing like never before
O my soul
I’ll worship Your Holy name

All sung to yourself until you get to a confusing bit at the end where it looks like you are saying your own soul is "Your Holy name". It really is a confused and awful song imo. Matt Redman is the worship leader in a church 7 miles from where I live and I know a few people who go to that church. Ive got half a mind to go there one day and tell him what I think of that song. He also wrote "The heart of worship", shame he didnt listen to words he wrote in that song.

Compare it to How Great Thou Art which says "And then sings my soul, my Savour God to Thee, how great Thou art" I dont care about the style of song and music, its about the content. Far too many modern songs are centred around us, what we get from God, that He did it for us, we receive blessings, we receive grace, etc. Far to self centred in my view. I consider a lot of this praise but not worship which is devoid from the church at the moment. No one wants to sing of their love for God any more

Most modern praise and worship music is written like this and it really is time the church fell in love with Jesus and the Father again instead of this descriptive self centred worship in the church across the world at the moment.

Another in this vein is "How great is our God" (sung to ourselves). "Your Grace is enough" sums up what is wrong with modern "worship" if you can call it that. Its basically saying I will settle for the minimum (it is enough) rather than seek a loving relationship with my God and Saviour, the minimum rather than the fullness of God.

I long for the day the church falls in love with Jesus again.
