If I had to guess, it dates back to the days when every church was liturgical where it was customary to stand for the processional, collect, and gloria, or perhaps even futher back when it was customary to stand for the entire service.

Why do we have to stand up when singing some songs? Also, I like the songs, but I really hate singing. I never do it. I just stand there and listen and follow along.
Standing during worship can differ between churches, I personally stand whenever I feel specifically lead to (same with the raising of hands). Singing is just another way to worship God, thank Him, honor Him, etc. So if you dislike singing that is okay, God loves all voices but if you aren't a fan then it's no big deal- just use the time of worship to pray or be silent in the presence of God- as long as you are using that time for His glory then you are fine.

Not only does standing enhance your diaphragm muscles for singing, it is also in adoration of the Lord to do so. Our church has been doing it more the past few years, encouraging the congregation to stand. Now we all stand without the encouragement!
