CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I don't know. I'm sure I have, but I apparently can't tell who is a violent criminal and who is not just by looking at them like other people can.

A lot of people are referring to actions and behaviors when they talk about someone being a thug; at the same time, there are people that keep saying people look like a thug. Someone mentioned dreads earlier, but I still don't see how having dreads makes one a thug.
Of course it doesn't, but that is a perception many have. I did a mini rant about it a while back:

That was my comment. Since the clothes weren't visible, I figured that may be another "thug" clue.

The other problem is that we know that this guy is a "thug" and yet he has no dreadlocks.
Of course not. Years ago, there were a few nice looking, clean cut white guys that were robbing homes in broad daylight. They would come to the door, say their car broke down and ask to use the phone, and when the home owner opened the door to allow this, forced their way in. Their image was not threatening, and they got away with this a few times before finally being apprehended. Ironically, no one labeled all white men as potential home invaders though...

I sort of think Phil & Graham Mitchell look like prototypical thugs, but, of course, they're really just actors. And they're old now so they've gotten less thuggish & more human over the decades.

Of course, that's the actual definition of the word and I'm not saying it's used in the way I described every time the word is used, but there does seen to be a bit of a double meaning to this particular word and who it generally is used to describe.
Not every violent criminal is referred to as a thug. Usually only ones that seem to fit a certain "look".
