January 1, 2017 is indeed a new year based on the traditions of men, but it is not the beginning of the true new year according to our Creator's calendar.

Exodus 12:1-2 - And Yahweh spoke unto Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, saying, This month shall be unto you the beginning of months: it shall be the first month of the year to you.
Exodus 12:3 - Speak you unto all the congregation of Israel, saying, In the tenth day of this month they shall take to them every man a lamb, according to the house of their fathers, a lamb for an house:
Exodus 12:6-7 - And you shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same month: and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening. And they shall take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses, wherein they shall eat it.
Exodus 12:11 - And thus shall you eat it; with your loins girded, your shoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and you shall eat it in haste: it is Yahweh's Passover.

The first month of the new year occurs at the time of Passover. The next new year will most likely begin at sundown on March 28, 2017 with Passover starting at sundown on April 10. The true new year does not begin in the dead of winter. It begins in the spring when new life begins to bud. It also does not begin in the dead of night at 12:00 midnight, but at sundown. All Biblical days begin and end at sundown.

Our Creator, Almighty Yahweh, created the heavenly bodies and set them in motion to determine the first day/month of the year. All of Yahweh's annual Holy Days throughout the year are based on the first day of that new year. All man-made holidays are based on their man-made new year of January 1. Whose calendar will you follow, your Creator's and His days or man's and his days?

January 1, 2017 is indeed a new year based on the traditions of men, but it is not the beginning of the true new year according to our Creator's calendar.

I would dispute the idea of a "true" New Year's Day. These things would be relative to the frame of reference. Obviously January 1 is the "true" first day of the new year relative to the Gregorian calendar. The "biblical" frame of reference is different. Both are "true" relative to the frame of reference. Fiscal years have a different "true" start as do many calendars around the world. None of them is any more "true" than the other, but "true" relative to their own count. Contemporary Jewish counting has two new year beginnings; sacred and civil: Nisan 1 and Tishri 1.

God doesn't care about these things in earthly ritual practice. But, knowledge of the biblical counting is indeed of utmost importance in understanding the timing of events to come(festivals and prophetic utterings; even judgment day timing). Though I would dispute your statement about the purpose of the heavenly bodies "to determine the first day/month of the year" because that is not possible to do by observation of the heavenly bodies. That determines months and days for "moedim/festivals" but cannot determine the beginning of the year. That's why God specifically stated "this month" as the beginning of the year because observation of the heavenly bodies doesn't allow determination of the beginning of the year.

But if we're going to get so carried away with the idea of only one specific "true" count, then you will have to stop using all forms of count. You can no longer writer "January 1" on your checks because there is no such a thing as "January 1" in the bible. You also should have no idea what year it is, because the year count is "man-made" and "2017" is not the "true" year. Legalism; it's the slipperiest slope of them all.

There is only one frame of reference that matters, Yahweh's. Without that framework taking precedence over man's framework, our timing will not be correct.

If biblical counting is of the utmost importance regarding festival timing, then God cares about it.

Gen 1:14 And Elohim said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:

If the months and days can be determined for the moedim, then day one of the year must be determined as well since all the moedim are determined based on day one of the new year.

I am not promoting discarding worldly calendars. We must live in this world and do certain things according to their calendars. However, Yahweh's calendar takes precedence since we need to keep His holy days holy.
