It goes back and forth. It still does. But, in our case, the average kept going up.

Not every animal had the right body plan and environment to take advantage of intelligence.

Sloths for example have smaller brains and slower metabolisms then their ancestors, which saves them a whole lot in energy requirements.

1. That we exist. The mere existence of something is never evidence for where it came from. Yes, even the fact that cars exist alone does not make for evidence that someone made the cars. You keep parroting this argument anyways, despite being repeatedly refuted, and everyone is sick of it.

2. That we are the smartest species. Obviously, on a planet with multiple species, there's going to be one that holds this distinction. It's inevitable, and it doesn't make our intelligence special in and of itself.

Because the combination of the other traits and environment meant that an increase in intelligence was a net advantage all the way to Homo sapiens.

Wolves are way smarter then mice, who are way smarter then lizards. It's a trait all animals have to different degrees. We are just an extreme example. But you have presented zero barriers to an increase in intelligence being evolved.

Australopithecus afarensis was probably not much smarter then a chimp, but lived on the savanna and walked upright.
