  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I'd believe that if there weren't anything malicious in the words. If it stuck to arguments, you'd be right.

Besides, a weak argument doesn't mean his position is wrong.

Of course it doesn't...unfortunately, he has no means of determining whether or not his position is true.

What did you take as malicious?

Since you ignored the question, I'll ask again...

Does your view have room for anything greater than what you already believe?

Probably not, right?
I answered you already: There is nothing greater. And to be clear...I do not "believe", but rather, I [know].

That's cause he went with the church over the Bible, but most do.

Most of it seemed malicious, or at least extremely lacking in benevolence.

Then why was that a complaint about my position? That I had no room in my view for anything greater...when you have no room in your view for anything greater?

I'm sure you think you know. So far, all you've alluded to is your perspective.

How do you "know" this thing you claim to "know"?

Well I've never claimed to be benevolent, Neo. I tend to reserve benevolence for those I see as deserving. I don't extend it to everyone.

Ana, can I ask what you mean by "greater" than what he believes?

Basically, he complained that my views don't allow for the learning of something "greater" in a vague sense of the word.

The silly thing about that is that he actually described his own views...not mine.

But you are saying his views are small (ie. have something greater than them)?

Why? Do you think it makes you vulnerable or something?

Benevolence? I don't think I'd say "vulnerable"...rather I'd say foolish.

Do you think that it's a good idea to be benevolent to everyone?

It's okay, he's like a rubber duck. He almost always comes back for more.

Although lately he has been listing to the side a bit. He will tell you that is normal.

Well let me put it this way...

He believes he knows something that is so important, he'll never learn anything else as remotely important. He'll never learn something "life-altering"...he'll never learn anything else that could shape who he is or his understanding of the world. In a sense, he's done learning anything important. Everything he'll learn from now on is a triviality compared to what he believes he already knows....

It's the very essence of what is meant by "close-minded". A world of possibilities is gone forever to him. A world of understanding is lost.

The irony in this....is that he views his position as "superior" to all others.
