The entire city is in lock-down.

Most likely, these were attacks that were already prepared (or being prepared) to be carried out at a later time, of which the execution has been accelerated as a response to the capture of Salah Abdeslam a few days ago.

And it looks like it's not over yet. Apparantly, there is something going on near the university of brussels at the moment. Students (locked inside for safety) are reporting to seeing police forces sneaking through the streets with weapons drawn.

Security cams from the airport suggest several suspects fleeing the scene right before and right after the first explosions. If correct, these "people" are still out there and might be looking to cause further panic and attacks.

A belt with explosives that wasn't detonated has been found in the debris at the airport.

Nails and other pieces of metal were added to the bombs in order to increase the amount of damage.

A kurdish newssite says IS was behind the attack.

I wonder if this might have been meant as a strike against the EU. The Metro station that was hit is really close to two major EU buildings.

It would be very hard to actually reach those EU buildings. They couldn't do it without help from the inside, as far as I know.
Been there once. Went through 3 check points before I actually walked into the building.

One can already note the stark difference between this thread and my thread on the Ankara attacks (which are perpetrated by either ISIS or secular/leftist/Marxist terrorists/extremists/radicals).

Regardless, disgusting attack by whoever it was against non-combatants.

I can imagine. But that being said, they may have been after people who work in the EU. The bomb went off during commuting time.

OK, let's have news and coverage, and empathy and support for casualties and their relatives.
But not excessive coverage or overreaction.

It only encourages terrorism by showing not how much death can be inflicted but how much attention and disruption and how many distressed people it can produce for relatively little effort.

(though it does appear at first sight as if one attacker thought better of it / chickened out.)

We should hand the television channels to a one-in-a 1,000,000 minority? Or a one-in-a 100,000 one?

Ow, certainly. The metro bombing certainly is a symbollic location, basically as-good-as right under the "Wetstraat", which is a big street that houses plenty of government buildings.

Difference being what has Belgium or the EU done to the Muslim world to justify this? Besides take in millions of Muslim migrants to their own detriment.

There is no justification for this attack just as there was no justification for the attacks in Turkey. And Turkey is the one that has taken in millions of actual Syrian refugees and is being told to just keep them all in with barely any help.

Each such attack adds more fuel and considering the amount of votes right wing parties get recently we sure will have a clean Europe soon.

That is extremely naive.

An uprising of right wing nationalists is not going to solve anything. Quite the opposite, it will just make matters worse.

You don't fight hate and intolerance with even more hate and intolerance.

In fact, every extra right wing vote is just fuel for jihadi recruitement propaganda.
ISIS would love nothing more then the west getting completely paranoid and refusing refugees, closing borders and booting up "security checks" based on racial / religious profiling.

That is exactly what such attacks attempt to trigger. ISIS (and alike) have no delusions that they are going to "conquer" the west by carrying out such an attack every couple months. As far as a "war against the west" goes, such attacks almost zero effect.

Sure, there is some panic today and some economic damage. But let's look at this objectively for a second... Last count, there are 34 deaths. In Paris, there were 130.

The fact is that in a single day, more people die in trafic. In the great scheme of things, these attacks are really nothing but "inconveniences" on a state / society level.

A couple weeks from now, the damages will be repaired and life will go on as usual.

Such attacks don't even make a dent in our infrastructures.

Let's look at the biggest terror attack in the west ever by such jihadi's: 9/11.
+3000 deaths. 2 world famous sky scrapers collapsed.

Honestly, what effect did this truelly have on the US as a nation?
Did this cripple the country somehow? Was it ever even remotely in existential danger?

Clearly, such attacks have other goals. In a very real sense, these attacks are not really directed at people or nations. They are directed at young generations of muslim kids with an identity crisis. The goal is not to cripple nations (because they can't do that; they do not have the means or resources to do that). The goal is to divide the world into camps. "The west" versus "islam".

No matter what the West does, its "what the jihadists want".

You are wrong.

All those attacks are done by muslims. Its the one constant. If you remove this constant out of the system and deport them back at their origin you solve this problem.
