  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Students Face Impeachment, Probation, for attending tequilla-themed party

Students who attended last weekend’s “tequila themed party” at Bowdoin College are now being threatened with disciplinary action, including a year of social probation and impeachment from the student government.

Earlier this week, Bowdoin administrators launched an investigation into “an act of ethnic stereotyping” when a group of students allegedly hosted a racially charged party. Students were encouraged to bring tequila to the party and some students were photographed wearing sombreros. The theme, however, did not sit well with administrators or the student government.

If you want to know what American 'progressives' want for the nation, just look at how things are on average university campuses. It's where their best and brightest are preparing our nation's youth, molding their young and impressionable minds into thinking this kind of culture is 'enlightened' and 'progress-minded'.

Remember folks: this is their mainstream. If you like this kind of stuff, vote 'progressive'. If not, then I urge you to move in a more moderate direction.

It blows my mind:
One of the party’s hosts was placed on social probation until March 2017, asked to complete an educational program and an Active Bystander Training, kicked out of her dorm room, and banned from social events on campus, such as an upcoming Spring Gala.

Most people, regardless of politics, will agree that nothing like this would happen if they had worn cowboy hats and had a Jack Daniels Party. However, you have to not be 'progressive' to see why, and to think there's something wrong with the inconsistency.

"[some] students spoke about how they felt victimized and attacked by the tequila themed party, though none had admitted to attending." (via link above)

I really wouldn't want to go down that route: a "right to take offence".
Let it out free and there will be someone who is, or chooses to be, offended at almost anything.

To feel "victimised" is good? How about laughing at the stupid gringos who think they know what Mexican culture is,
or even better just be happy with the people merely having a good time and who are not dealing in insults or cultural points at all?

(Better ban Halloween costumes. The dead and the undead might take offence.)

There is a right to take offence, people can react how they want.

It's the people that think their offence means anything that are the problem.

I would love to be a judge or on the panel ruling on cases like this.

"the panel has decided the plaintiffs really need to get a life, then they won't have time to worry so much about what other people are doing in private.

This might explain why it happened...

How long before we find out that this involved a little more than party hats?
Wishful thinking. We're talking about "progressive" culture here. It's like when Ben Shapiro recently was slated to speak at a campus. Progressives were saying they felt their lives were in danger.... Because ONE person, not on the left, was going to speak his ideas.

Such insensitivity and speaking from a position of privilege would likely put you in the case of defendant in your own tribunal.

So basically, it seems to me like parts of the student body does not approve of a party that is insensitive and culturally appropriative, particularly in the context of ongoing racial issues on campus, and reacted largely as such. A great many others reacted to this reaction by calling it out much in the same way the OP did. So, someone do me a favor, and explain how this works, exactly?

Remember folks: this is their mainstream. If you like this kind of stuff, vote 'progressive'. If not, then I urge you to move in a more moderate direction.

How, exactly, does a plurality of students voicing an opinion and using internal tools to ham-handedly try to push for more inclusiveness at one small liberal-arts college entail the liberal mainstream and the goals of the mainstream liberals?

If and when we find that out, then we can consider it.

Until that time, this appears to be one group, trying to control what another group does in private and on their own time. This is no different, than a fundie christian, doing the same with people they disagree with.

This 'words are violence' nonsense doing the rounds with these wet-behind-the-ears college types today absolutely makes my blood boil.

I've been physically assaulted once, where I was nearly glassed. (Actually, strike that, I *was* glassed, but thankfully it missed my face, hit my shoulder and shattered.)

THAT'S violence. If the worst these kids have to worry about is someone saying things they don't agree with and having their ideas criticised, they should count their lucky stars and stop piddling away their expensive higher education they are privileged (cough) to be receiving.

Insensitive and culturally appropriative... Calling Poe on this post because I'm not sure if you're doing a parody or serious.

In the late 70s or early 80s the Latino student group at the UCLA Graduate School of management routinely hosted Tequila Thursdays.

It would be interesting to find out just how many rudely negative responses the college gets when they try to get donations from these people in a few years.

That's something else isn't it?To have tuition paying students at a university being taught what it means to dare to speak and assemble on a private campus in America.

One day in the not to distant future, as when a Sander's drone would make the White house or majority in both houses, pepper spray will be deemed inhumane due to someone sprayed by an authority figure dying due to allergy to capsicum or some such.
Pepper spray goes on the shelf , since cops can now electrocute us with little gun like devices, big gatherings needing dispersal will be microwaved instead. And in the wrong hands of an authority figure at the controls, possibly cooked like a sausage.
LOVE the name: Active denial technology. Don't think these won't come into the public sector on homeland soil. Police are part of the Executive branch of government. And we in many states across the land have seen military vehicles and weapons arriving in our hometowns.
