  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What biblical scholars told you TK that Paul was homosexual? The general consensus is that Paul definitely did not like women. No question about that. However, I have yet to hear any biblical scholar arguer he was homosexual.

Nobody "told" me or anyone else that he was homosexual... but they have considered the possibility and raised the question.

And to say that he didn't like women is something of an understatement. He didn't like himself all that much, and was constantly at war with his own "flesh..." it's enough to cause some less-than-wild speculation.

There are several out there; here's an section from one of my personal favorites, John Shelby Spong:

http://www.beliefnet.com/Faiths/Christianity/2004/04/Was-The-Apostle-Paul-Gay.aspx

Paul felt tremendous guilt and shame, which produced in him self-loathing. The presence of homosexuality would have created this response among Jewish people in that period of history. Nothing else, in my opinion, could account for Paul's self-judging rhetoric, his negative feeling toward his own body, and his sense of being controlled by something he had no power to change. The war that went on between what he desired with his mind and what he desired with his body, his drivenness to a legalistic religion of control, his fear when that system was threatened, his attitude toward women, his refusal to seek marriage as an outlet for his passion-nothing else accounts for this data as well as the possibility that Paul was a gay male.

Even if you disagree -- and I'm sure you do -- it's worth a read.

Having feelings beyond your control for which both your God and your countrymen say you should be put to death for would certainly put one off living...

If people don't have cognitive dissonance now and then, perhaps they need a spiritual checkup?

The closer one walks with God, the more unworthy they should feel.

Wow. If thats true then i see that perhaps the Lord is indeed leading me in the right direction...away from bible scholars. Paul did not hate woman, he loved all Christians, and he had woman helping in him in his ministry. With respect, i must say this, if thats the consensus then it is ignorant of truth, and showing a severe lack of discernment.

I suspect they'd be more interested in your pastor than in me.
If so, it would be for a different reason.

My pastor preaches victory over sin.

Your high opinion of yourself, then, speaks volumes.

Right -- because Paul loved women, thought they should take positions in the church, and was even a staunch supporter of marriage...

...or are we talking about another Paul?

I can understand why you must say that... dogma is a powerful force.

I'm guessing that your Paul wasn't wracked with self-loathing, or felt himself a victim of forces he couldn't control... at least not until he found Jesus...

Was Mother Teresa a homosexual?

I would have to examine her writings before I could speculate on what might have been in her mind.

Isn't she a saint?

No, but there's a movement to make her one.

If she was homosexual, would that somehow stop her from becoming a saint?
