  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Are all demons spirits?
Is this line of questioning going somewhere?

There are two types of angels: fallen and unfallen.

Of the fallen, there are two types: chained and unchained.

Fallen angels are demons.

The rest are not.

And all spirits are angels -- whether they're fallen or unfallen.

Man has a spirit assigned to him at birth.

Some call it a "guardian angel."

I would say that's a pretty accurate description.

Some think the spirit that was assigned to Elijah was later reassigned to John the Baptist.

That's why John the Baptist dressed and lived like Elijah, and was even mistaken for him.

Dunno.

I think, Extraneous, that Christianity has been all too often a religion of sickness and that now we need a religion of health. It is definitely of no constructive purpose to preach a religion centering on the view we are born evil, corrupt through and through, that the majority of the human race is bound for hell, that even the elect deserve to go to hell but are just lucky. All those concepts do is build in a huge guilt trip and an overall negative approach to life. It is precisely for that reason that many have left the church. We need something more positive. If we are going to get anywhere, we need to see ourselves as fundamentally worthy in our eyes and the eyes of God. We need to see ourselves as having the potential to do great and beautiful things. We need to see God as continually offering new potentials for new forms of beauty. We need to see ourselves as loved and appreciated by God, not judged sternly and damned.

I see only futility in life. Everything is vanity, sayeth the preacher. All creation has been subjected to frustration, sayeth Paul in Romans 8.

Psalm 42:1 As the deer pants for streams of water,
so my soul pants for you, my God.
2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.
When can I go and meet with God?

To die is the point. That's is our reward. Hoping in God is the only real hope we have.

You want to die, but you can't do it yourself because of course that's a mortal sin, so you spend your entire life in misery waiting for God to finally kill you so that you can spend eternity in the next world thanking Him for getting you out of this one... that sound about right?

That's all well and adorable, but there are plenty of people on this board and elsewhere -- including the OP himself -- who have used the Gospel for precisely that purpose. So this isn't just my thinking, it's my experience.

A tool (such as the Gospel) is morally neutral; no better nor worse than the person who wields it -- and what they wield it for.
The 1,000,000 mile diameter sun 93 million miles away is not physically neutral, Sargent. Neither is God in His eternal Holy radiance.

Words, doctrines, and religions don't cut it for me. Never have.

As I grew in the physical there was no god in sight. No god detectable. A bunch of words. No million miles in diameter radiance. Nothing.

The heavens were shut unto me. Sealed tight.

I did not turn to words, duscussion topics, doctrines, teachings, or to follow a religion.

When I turned to Him the heavens opened.

So, call it "us and them" or Hissonear's way. The Church is founded on the heavens opening.

As the physical sun shines on us the radiance of Him can shine on everyone. Knock on the door, heavens door, ask Him to open it. I know what it is like when it is sealed tight. Seek Him more than the physical sun's radiance to shine on you.

Speaking as part Cherokee now, that would be a violation of Noah's prophecy.
How so?

I can picture you as "Lone Watie" and me as "Josie Wales" in this scene of the movie [no offense] ehehe:

quote J.W "..besides, it ain't supposed to be easy to sneak up on an Indian".

No sir. I don't want to die, that's the point. I don't follow the whole mortal sin theology. All sin is mortal in my opinion.

I reckon so.

I would take the Indians over the RNC or DNC, to be my fellow Americans, any day of the week.

Morally, it is -- Private.

Sounds then like you're trapped in a pointless and futile life, waiting for God to pull you out of it...

Current Catholic, actually... non-practicing.
But familiar with your catechism, I take it?

Your reference to "mortal sin" (as opposed to "venial sin") was a tip-off.

Sounds then like you're trapped in a pointless and futile life, waiting for God to pull you out of it...

Romans 7:14 For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.
15 For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I.
16 If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good.
17 Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.
19 For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.
20 Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
21 I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me.
22 For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:
23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.
24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?
25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.
