• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Did the Catholic Church changed the Sabbath to Sunday?

Right.
It starting changing from the lunar to Saturday after the Jews where exiled to Babylon, Constantine cinched it when he forbade Saturday to be honored changing it to Sunday.
The last sabbath was Friday and the next will be Friday but when the Gregorian month changes it usually changes days of the week.
What day do you worship?

Hahaha, that was a loaded question!

I worship everyday
Sometimes I attend Church on a Sunday
Sometimes I attend Synagogue on a Friday night
I rest, kick back, study, pray, be a couch potatoe, surf the net, interact on forums, watch a movie or whatever (anything but work) according to the lunar Sabbath.

Does that mean the fire department, hospitals etc should have sabbath off?
No. The law states that if a life is in dangers, you break other laws to save a life.

Sunrise and Sunset determine days therefore you don't have to observe the "exact peak" of the moon therefore eyeballing works.
Or you can load a app on your phone, lol

So all restaurants must be closed on sabbath? Food save a life? Gas saves a life?
Good morning tb :)
In the scripture, the day before the onset of Shabbat is called "Preparation Day" (Mark 15:42; Luke 23:54; John 19:31). To be able to keep the Sabbath properly, adequate preparation is necessary which means planning ahead.
So for the most part, with the exception of medical emergencies of course, Sabbath-Keepers I know have little to no problems.

The weekly Sabbath is independent of both the sun and the moon. There are of course festivals that are considered like Sabbaths to the LORD that would be considered lunar. Eyeballing it was good enough for back then, but I'm lazy enough to use a calendar. I do think it's pretty easy to tell when there is no moon in the sky.

You don't have to have restaurants open in order to feed someone. But yes, obviously preparing food is labor, yet food preparation is allowed on Shabbat. I'm not sure what you mean by "Gas saves a life," but whatever saves a life is allowed on Shabbat. For example, doctors and hospital staff routinely work in hospitals on Shabbat.

Really, have you read Maimonides on this subject?

Typically food is prepared before hand.

I have read some of Maimonides, but not exhaustively. Instead of asking me if I've read him, why not just quote the part that sources what you want to say.

Cooked food is prepared before hand. But not uncooked food. If you want to make a sandwich or a salad, there is nothing preventing you from doing so. Remember that I honor Deuteronomy 17:8-13.

8 If cases come before your courts that are too difficult for you to judge--whether bloodshed, lawsuits or assaults--take them to the place the LORD your God will choose.
9 Go to the priests, who are Levites, and to the judge who is in office at that time. Inquire of them and they will give you the verdict.
10
You must act according to the decisions they give you at the place the LORD will choose. Be careful to do everything they direct you to do.
11 Act according to the law they teach you and the decisions they give you. Do not turn aside from what they tell you, to the right or to the left.
12 The man who shows contempt for the judge or for the priest who stands ministering there to the LORD your God must be put to death. You must purge the evil from Israel.
13 All the people will hear and be afraid, and will not be contemptuous again.

Because I'll have to track down the appropriate quotes and it would be a waste of time if you were already familiar with them

Why don't you summarize what he says first, and we'll see if I even need the quotes to begin with.

Fair enough, for some there is leeway for what is considered work.
I've noticed that generally speaking we women don't get a break. 2/3 of women's work is still permissable on Shabbat, food preparation, child care, etc. It's simply necessary for daily life. We do get a break from cleaning, but the cleaning simply gets postponed, i.e. we have a boatload of dishes to do after Shabbat..

Here ya go:)

The modern Jewish calendar is based upon the "mean motions of the sun and moon, the true [calendar] having been set aside." (Maimonides, Kiddusch Ha-hodesch)
