Creeping Sharia is in their future.

I think it's safe to drop the "Creeping" part when you vote a majority in office. Democracy, and all that.

I am not concerned about it all. I lived in Detroit during '66-'67 while working on a Master's degree, which I received in the fall of '67 from Wayne State Univ. Detroit is filled with citizens from all over the world, including professors. I had Chinese, German (who read math books in a basement during the bombing raids of WWII to dispel the fears), Korean, and host of other foreign professors (I received my degree in math). I had received an NSF grant to finance my degree, and also had an Arab free tutor, provided by the university. He was a wonderful guy, and recently retired as a math professor.

I lived a Forest and Second Ave. during the summer race riots of '67. President Johnson came on tv one night to make a speech to the residents of the city, saying he would not tolerate any more shootings, fire bombing, looting, or rioting. Several of us in my building who were students banded together in one or two rooms for security (we had no guns or weapons to defend ourselves) and to wait out the riots. Tanks were sent through the streets and low-flying fighter jets came over the next morning in a show of force. That pretty much quelled the riots and things simmered down pretty fast.

My point in relaying that account from my past is to say that race is not the important factor in this. My attitude would be to give the newly elected officers a chance to show what they can do. If they view their job as one where they will work to rebuild the city (goodness knows, Detroit needs it), then I am in favor of giving them our support and wish them well. For I have seen from experience that there are some good Muslims (just as there are some good and bad Christians). When I was teaching at a Community College, I had many classes of Iranian students when the Shah was in power. I became close friends with many of them and found them a joy to teach (I can't say this for all of them, however, just as I can't for many of locals I taught). I was also able to share my faith with some of them, as well as listen to them share with me about the Muslim faith.

If they have ulterior motives, then that will come to light very soon, and they may then be voted out of office when their terms expire. I say to all of the Christians of Detroit (and there are many of them) that this is a good opportunity to show to the Muslim population of Detroit what true Christians are like - accepting, loving, supportive and friendly - perhaps many chances will avail themselves for telling them the good news of the Gospel and for relating to them why Jesus is worthy to be worshipped.

Egypt put hundreds of non-violent Muslim politicians to death- the same nation who once enslaved the Levites and who bans anything in relevance to the holy Exodus.

In other words, we live in a predominantly Christian country so they'll have about as much luck here as they do there.

It's a representative democracy. The Polish Catholics moved to the 'burbs according to the article, leaving a mishmash of Yemenis, Bosnians and Bangladeshis. Those nationalities are very different - they don't even have a common language.

We in the US live in a Constitutional Republic in which the governing members are selected by Democratic Process --with the notable exception of the President, who is constitutionally selected by the Electoral College.

The Electorate of that city has spoken.

The good thing about our system is that if there is a difficulty or a mistake made by the electorate, the electorate can correct that mistake in the next election.

This does not concern me a bit. The US Constitution is still the supreme law of the land.

As long as they are qualified to do their jobs, and they aren't seeking to force their religious views and laws on anyone or let them interfere with their work, I don't see a problem.
Exactly..I don't have any problem with ANY faith group with a majority in government as long as they don't start passing laws that infringe on anybody else's faith or lack of faith. That includes a person's work ethic
Some religious groups forbid work on certain days..SDA's do not work on Saturdays(their Sabbath)and some other Christians refuse to work on Sundays.

We've had Muslim majority councils in the UK for years. It's never been a problem.

We also have 13 Muslim MPs, 8 of whom are women. And we're about to elect a Muslim as Mayor of London (i hope).
