  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Do you pray in tounges ?

I don't, never have. Maybe it's the Catholic in me...

though am not sure catholics can I've never seen it... it's all about quiet thoughtful praying lol

Nope, and according to the WCF I'm only supposed to if the "tongues" are a real language.

I wonder how you can pray if it's without that. I understand how you can pray for 15 minutes with the Bible, but longer and what on earth I've got no idea. That's a thing I can't.

Words, sometimes I even pray without words...If I don't have the words, I'll pray that I simply do have the words and just sort of open my heart to God in silence.

Yes I do. Often when I'm alone, or with a few of my friends, we will sometimes pray in the spirit.

There have been times that God has spoken through me in church using tonges, and there were interpretation of them that followed each time.

There's often confusion about praying in the Spirit(tongues) vs speaking in tongues. Praying in the Spirit is speaking from your spirit being. You know those times that you pray and you don't really know what to pray for? It's good to pray in the spirit. Personal experience: I received a text one night from a close friend, asking to pray for a baby of other friends of hers. I didn't know any of the situation except that he was in the hospital. I prayed "Father be with this child, the parents and the family. Also with the doctors and the nurses that you give the guidance and wisdom." Immediately afterwards I felt that I should keep praying. Again I started out with my language, then started praying in the spirit. While I was praying in the spirit, I just kept hearing lungs. So I prayed for his lungs to be opened. I sent my friend a text saying that I felt in my spirit to pray for his lungs. She replied shockingly as she read that text his lungs opened up and everything went to normal. That child is healed today. I don't know what caused his lung failure. But I do know that he is alive today and has not had any problems with his lungs anymore. I wish I could say that happens every time, but it doesn't.

Speaking in tounges to the church body, does require an interpretation it's for edifying the body. Just as if someone trying to teach me something but they are speaking Mandorin, I wouldn't know what they are saying. If someone is speaking in tongues, you can tell in your spirit if it is being done properly.

And yes, there are churches, and people, that does it in show, by jumping over pews, running hecticly around the church, or whatever. I've been to some that do this and it seemed as though they were just doing it for show.

I've had things like that happen to me as well, but they're usually just as vague. I just choose to believe the times it works out is nothing more than random chance and coincidence.

Believe there can be abuses. I have spoken in tongues myself. I do believe it is personally edifying and
aalso appropriate when done in order in church. Gods Holy Spirit is wonderful for interceding when we don't know what to prayer

Why is it that Darth, myself, and others like us don't? Especially if we have asked to receive our tounge. Why is it that for some lack of words results in silence but in others a tounge?

I only received it when someone laid hands on me. First I thought that I could speak in tongues because this girl next to me in church when I was just saved went lalalalalashalalalala lol I could do that too. I thought it was amazing that the Holy Spirit meant with this one la: Lord save so and so and with the other la he meant something else. That was just made up nonsense.

Yes.
But not in church in private. If speaking in tongues in church you need an interpreter. As its not edifying for other people who cant understand what you saying.

That's for when you are onstage speaking to everyone. You can still do it in church for yourself.

If someone is speaking in tongues, you can tell in your spirit if it is being done properly.

There was one time that I was at a church in Minneapolis, and during the worship service 2 of the people behind me spoke in tongues. They didn't go on for a long period of time, they just each said one phrase and that was it. I can't explain why, but for some reason that was the one time that I heard it and felt that it could be real. All of the other times that I've heard it, it always sounded like babbling and it seemed like the people were just doing it for show...

I've never done it myself, but I think that the writings of Paul indicate that there are unrecognizable tongues which come from the Spirit, and that speaking in tongues does not always involve a known tongue or must always be used to break a language barrier.

I also don't understand how people still go on and on about it being a gift that everyone receives, when scripture states very clearly that it isn't. You can show them the scriptures, and they still go right on believing what they want to believe.

Oh that's because that text is about the gift of tongues, that you give a message in tongues which gets interpreted or just speak another language as in Acts. The personal prayer tongue anyone can receive.

I still don't understand why it's considered necessary or beneficial for prayer, though.

So there are things on your mind and your heart that you can't put in to words. God is God. He knows all and He certainly knows our minds and hearts; He knew them before we knew ourselves.

A lot of times I've heard it, frankly, it just sounded 'not of God'.

Why or how is it necessary or beneficial to prayer in any way? God knows what's on our hearts whether we say or not, so it's just seems pointlessly redundant, especially if you don't understand your own prayer language.

My other main issue is why did it pretty much vanish from the church for the vast majority of it's history?

We don't know what to pray, so the Spirit helps us.
Even Jesus prayed. Didn't God know what He wanted?
I believe He wants us to ask Him. Ask from Me and I will give you nations to your inheritance.

He who speaks in an unknown tongue speaks to God (1 Corinthians 14:2). That is, he prays. But the prayers he prays are prayed with his spirit in words given by the Holy Spirit. Therefore these prayers will be effective because they are according to the will of God.

That man from the revival in Wales prayed 6 hours a day or so in tongues. That woman who rented him a room thought he was nuts, but Wales got saved.

To follow up on the question you asked God knows and knew us before we knew ourselves and I agree with that let me ask this, do you pray for you loved ones who aren't saved to come to Christ? Or to have a great day? Why pray at all because He already knows the situation right?
Just as in my first comment when I prayed for the little chi, I have never met the family, still haven't. But when I prayed for him in the spirit and the Holy Spirit told me to to pray or actually to speak that his lungs be opened and when I did his lungs opened up. The Holy Spirit will reveal things to you that you don't know about. I've got other testimonies like that.

The reason why it seemed to have vanished from churches is simple. People, legalism got in the way. But it's actually been part of the church movement since the day of Pentecost. At the beginning of the Baptist church, they were spirit filled. So was John Wesley and the Methodist movement. Look at Smith Wigglesworth, Amy Simple McPherson.

One of my dearest friends, who is a Christian Historian, who also has the worlds largest collection of Church history, has several things that shows the Holy Spirit movement throughout time.

Tried that. My ex-MIL laid hands one me once for that reason, or rather she grab me by the wrists and threw my hands up in the air demanding that I hold my hands up "for it to work". It was the single-greatest experience of spiritual abuse in my 28 years in the church.

Then there's the host of other experiences which ranked pretty close to that, both my own and those that I witnessed happening to others.

I still don't understand why it's considered necessary or beneficial for prayer, though.

That has been my observation as well.

I have to agree. The only time I was amazed was as I pointed out before was the man singing and the other man interpretation and it was about love i was a atheist and just started going to church and I was amazed

Most if the time it just bugs me as I feel it's fake that they think they have to prove something in actually want too weep for them that they feel they have to prove anything.... also it ruins my worship I know the people who do it the most so avoid setting any were near them :/

Plus as you said god knows all, I just like to talk to him and come too him I don't need to 0rove anything or be anything special... like if my kids started acting like that towards me I be like what are you doing?? You know I love you just I know you, you need to prove anything just talk with me and get it out.... that's love just being there in the moments.

I actually feel a lot better that am not the only one who thinks thus. I felt bad

I think tongues in the Bible were foreign languages that people knew instantly but they were real spoken languages. Many languages use the word tongue to mean language and I think it is so in the Bible. People that are speaking the gibberish tongues I'm sure are feeling real emotions and may think it is tongues but I think they are just over flowing with emotion and don't have words for what they feel inside.
