  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The Homeless.

No one is a criminal just for being homeless. However, I do think that the rate of petty crimes are high among the homeless.

That may be possible.

I'd like to focus on your first sentence. There may be some disagreement regarding homelessness and whether it is a criminal offense to be homeless.

I know places if not most that create laws that cause homeless to break those laws by just trying to exist. Like sleeping on the beach or city parks.

Are the homeless criminals?

Just respond with what first comes to mind after you read the question.

Thanks.
"Brinny, are you ok?". ;)
Of course, being homeless is not a crime. At least not here, in Western Europe.

I wasn't aware that laws were actually created with the intent to cause the homeless to break those laws....

Depends on the individual city, they all have different laws and different ways to deal with the homeless population.

That happened to me once. I was in a town in northern California and I was taking a nap in a park. This big tall policeman kicked me in the feet to wake me up and inform me I was breaking the law. I looked at him like he was crazy but I did not say anything.

On another note, I am convinced that it´s much harder to obey all laws when you are homeless. Also, you probably are even likely to inadvertantly violate laws you didn´t even know existed.

that's kinda' disturbing.....

Can you elaborate?

Like anyone a homeless person could decide to break the law (and to an extent they may be more desperate than a person with access to a home) if they thought it was the best option: but that is true of everyone. But, desperate people do desperate things.

Yes, it is possible that this could happen.

I'm wondering about those who are homeless and haven't intended to break any law, but just are without a place to call home.

In the link, it's down the page a bit, after the piece about women's health:

http://www.aclusouthcarolina.org/news/2013/8
If I read this correctly: They get visitors, and they want everything to look clean, orderly, proper and neat.
The homeless are a problem, and problems are better kept invisible.

Then again, just this weekend there´s the annual Altstadtfest (OldTown festivity) in my small town. Everybody´s gonna get wasted, they wil urinate where they want to, and there´ll be vomit in every corner. But, alas, that´s us (the actually orderly, proper, hard working people who have earned our right to a bit of entertainment), and not them lazy failures.

where did you read that they get visitors?

What you said in your 2nd paragraph....ironic, isn't it?

There´s some kind of anniversary coming up, isn´t there? But maybe I was reading too much into it?
Doesn´t really matter, though, I think. Most towns have and want to have visitors all the time, anyway.
That´s why in many towns here there is a ban for the homeless (and other such human nuisances) around the central station.

I guess nobody wants the thought "This could be me" to creep in. It´s "them".
Hey, in my early twenties I lived among the homeless for a couple of years.
