I'm referring to a consciousness perspective. Isn't empathy nothing more than synapses firing in the brain? It actually doesn't exist.

Last time I checked my synapses do exist, so if empathy is 'only synapse firing' it follows that empathy exists. I really must stop digging

Nope, there is no real empathy of a person, no caring, it's nothing but the result of a naturalistic mechanism in operation.

Even assuming that this is completely true, why does this matter? The idea that my consciousness is an illusion has no effect on the fact that I am experiencing consciousness. The idea that my emotions are illusory has no effect on the fact that I experience them.

The question then is how much do we create or control our own illusion and what exactly is the mechanism of the shared illusion that most of us seem to experience. When does illusion become disillusion?
