  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What's on your mind?

I get ignored here a lot which is why i rarely post.
So, you complain about being ignored, but when someone is asking you a question, you ignore them. Uh, huh... I see how this works. :p

What the heck?

I got a letter in the mail, saying that I got a scholarship! It's from the college's scholarship foundation, and it's adressed to a good friend of mine, but it was sent to my address. It also says I need to return a thank you letter by Thursday, using "a pre-addressed, stamped envelope" that is supposedly "attached." It's nowhere to be found. Of course, I will be dropped if they don't get it in time.

The amount that the letter mentions was taken off my tuition when I registered last week. That said, Demetre is an awesome guy and a friend of mine, so the first order of business is to make sure I didn't accidentally get a scholarship that was supposed to be his. And then maybe I can hand deliver my thank you card, so that it won't be late. :)

Congratulations, college. VERY efficient of you...

This is a very scary thought :) Then again, I'm not really surprised. Having a college degree often means very little.
Isn't it? Sadly, that's true but the same could be said for a master's degree. ha ha.

True. I think that intelligence can't really be measured or determined solely by academic performance in an institution. I know people who have advanced degrees and are "experts" in their fields. They aren't all necessarily philosophical or capable of critical thought. Some are of course, but others are just very educated and knowledgeable on a specific topic.

Having never been to college, I've always wondered how I would fare were unceremoniously thrust inside.

I just assumed you had earned your degree already or were in the process. I would imagine you would fare quite well. I don't know your learning style or study habits, but you seem to enjoy thinking about things deeply and analyzing concepts/ideas. That ability usually carries a person a long way, especially in the humanity based programs.

I always find it funny that degrees are always considered a mark of intellect and lack of a degree is considered a mark of a dolt.

Yet, the very minds that shaped the world of today (at least a large part of it) were college drop outs or never went in the first place. Bill Gates and Steve Jobs for example.

While you have shining examples of "brilliance" with degrees, such as George W Bush and Obama.

Its a piece of paper that only opens doors and nothing more. You could have the IQ of an almond yet are looked upon as a genius.

I for one dont consider myself stupid, yet I am a college drop out (will return some day to finish out my degree)

College and any academic institution is not necessarily for everyone. All college means is you can keep bashing your head into a wall while thrusting yourself deeper in debt.

Thats why when people get out of college they are far more likely to end up busing tables than landing a career in the field they studied for. (Speaking generally)

Which is why I always hated that standardized tests in high school and college always seemed to have such importance placed on them. I fared pretty badly on the GRE exam in my sophomore college year, which was a requirement to get into vet school, but I personally feel I am more intelligent (not to say that conceitedly) than my performance on that test suggested. I mean, I could write long essays well if I weren't expected to think critically and write out something decent in less than forty-five minutes. But I guess that was all part of the objective, to see if I could think and write fast enough in a time-based situation. Still, I call shennanigans. And without googling it, I pretty much doubt I spelled that word correctly.

I think that the most successful people typically are businessmen. They just seem to be shrewd and know how to problem solve and market things. Not everyone has that ability. I am not a fan of Obama, but he definitely is very intelligent. His intelligence though is more of an academic or intellectual type. He lacks a lot when it comes to common sense and making good decisions. I don't think he is able to solve problems or formulate solutions well. So, I guess you could say that people who accomplish things and get things done must have a gift when it comes to critical thinking that others (even intellectuals) lack.

A classic example would be the absent minded professor. Maybe a brilliant researcher or scholar in his field but incapable of functioning normally in the real world, lol.

Nope. I just read a lot, and have accumulated a sizable personal library. :) I lack the funds for college, and figure I can jumpstart my education with reputable books and lectures which have been made available online free of charge. Family drama has also necessitated my staying at home. All in all, it's a fine situation... but I still muse about the Lyceum experience. Perhaps sometime. A degree would be fun... but maybe that's pride, I don't know.
