  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I recently went to Nashville with my husband during one of his business trips and I felt like I walked into a ever present shrine for Andrew Jackson. I thought I was going to be sick. And you would have thought I was the novelty there, being asked all sorts of questions about what it's like to be Native American by complete strangers. I'm sure there has to be other Native Americans who live in Nashville, but some of those people acted like they had never seen an Indian before. Suffice to say, my husband was thankful that I kept my tongue, especially around his co-workers, but it sure wasn't easy for me to do. I really wanted to unleash my wrath on some of those ignorant people.
How on earth would total strangers have figured you for a Native American just by looking? Half of the time people assume someone is white, from down past the southern border, or is from South Asia before automatically assuming they're Native American. Even then, the majority of people (even in the south) don't say boo to you about any of it, regardless. For those that actually felt the need to ask you questions for whatever reason, they were likely just curious and/or attempting to engage you in conversation to be friendly and likely didn't intend to offend you in any way. I'd be really surprised if that was the case, honestly.

By my physical appearance and by the way I dress, if you must know, not to mention speaking to my husband in my native tongue while we were out in public.

You weren't there, so you don't have the slightest inclination to what you're talking about, therefore your opinion on the matter is completely irrelevant.
It happens around here on occasion to anyone who seems interesting.
As for myself, i engage in conversation with Chinese if i run across anyone - i am still learning bits and pieces of the language.
Its so cool, too.

Wouldnt mind hearing Native.

No, I wasn't there, but your many posts here at CF about the hurts you've endured in your life, and your particular dislike for white people does lead me to believe that your every interaction with white people is seen through the lens of said past hurts.

I speak Cherokee, Choctaw (not as well), and a little bit of Lakota. I later taught my husband and to our children to speak Cherokee.

My husband isn't as fluent in it as I am or our children are, but he understands quite a bit of it though.

That is cool. I commend you on your efforts.

My old bf was half Cherokee.
I have a pic i drew of him somewhere....
In Pittsburgh we have three rivers named from the Natives.
Monongahela, Ohio and Allegheny. We also have another river nearby the Youghiogheny. Yawk-a-gainy.

Shay-shay [thank you Chinese] Ne-ha-ma [how are you?]

I used to work in a Chinese restaurant and picked up a lot working there. My close friends were Chinese.

There appears to be an underlining subtle attitude that Native Americans just need to get over the past atrocities committed against their ancestors. I can't help but wonder if a non-Native American would ever go up to a Jew and tell them to just get over the Holocaust. It's the past after all, so therefore, it should no longer matter.

"America was built on two monumental crimes: The genocide of the Native American and the enslavement of the Africans. The tendency of official America is to memorize other people's crimes and to forget its own to seek a moral high ground as a pretext to ignore real issues." - Mahmood Mamdani

And so you're solution to our current state of affairs should be what ?
