  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Schools that teach creationism in the science class.

Yes, the Heaven's Gate cult demonstrated that intelligence can co-exist with religion.

Those guys were top-notch web designers.

Extreme example is extreme and not representative of the many religious people who are scientists or view science and religion as compatible.

Psssst, I have two degrees in the sciences. I also have a degree in mathematics (pure math, not applied). Yet I am religious and I enjoy being religious :)

Would you say it is because you prioritize?

Can you balance the two correctly?

You may enjoy it but is it true? or is truth not an issue?

Tell me what truth is and I'll tell you if it matters. I say that because defining truth is a difficult thing. For me truth matters but for me truth's definition is "that which God is" and "that which God reveals". Some think of truth as "correspondence between concept and reality" but that invites the question "what is real?" and then a whole can of worms is open and the little things are wiggling all across the field of human ideas.

So, yes in my understanding of truth religion is true. Your experience may vary.

No, I am not so conceited as to think that I've found the answer to all the philosophical and observational problems that exist between the sciences and religion. To me what matters is "how shall I live?" and how to answer that question. It seems to me that goodness matters and once I acknowledge that what follows is asking "why does goodness matter?" and answering that question leads to God in my experience. Others may reach a different conclusion. Let them be firmly persuaded about their answer. I am firmly persuaded by the answer given in the four gospels.

Agreed, although I would say religious extremism on the levels where people are censoring science significantly could contribute to that.

Nothing wrong with that.

Bottom line, whatever works for you.

Religious extremism also demands a great deal of denial, not only denial but very selective denial.
AV, do you believe that Mohammed rode up to heaven on a winged horse? no? but you do believe that Jesus was raised from the dead?

In reality, any extremist view is going to require; denial, confirmation bias and a good set of defense mechanisms to protect the extreme view, from reality.

Doesn't matter whether it is an extreme religious view, or anything else.

Yes I really didn't need to include the word extremist, belief in anything without evidence is going to require denial.

Again, I disagree.

The Heaven's Gate cult were both religious extremists, and top-notch webmasters as well.

Of course not.

Of course.

And just FYI, I believe Elijah went to Heaven in a tornado.

2 Kings 2:11 And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.

And Enoch was taken to heaven by God.

But not Mohammed.

At least the person or persons who wrote the Quran had the sense to realise a few things,
If you want to travel any kind of distance you need a horse and in order to fly the horse would need wings,
so if Mohammed wanted to get up to heaven he would need a flying horse.
To an illiterate peasant what could make more sense than that?

What they didn't have the sense to realize, is that we believe that after the completion of the Scriptures in AD 96, there would be no more prophets; and that anyone claiming to be a prophet would automatically be considered a false prophet.

Knowing that fact would have saved 913 people from Jonestown.

The Heaven's Gate cult lived in complete and absolute denial of everything that made sense and died because of it.

What has being a top-notch webmaster have to do with denial? nothing.

Is that why they ran a successful business called Higher Source?
