  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Books written on the question of you existing alongside your cousins?

Because the same, simple principle operates in understanding why humans and monkeys coexist.

Not that this will make a scrap of difference to one who simply discards evidence willy-nilly.

There is no evidence for what creationists choose to believe so for them all evidence is suspect, that's why the hate facts.
If they shut down parts of their brain it's obvious that other parts they need to work with will be compromised.

If we allow ourselves to believe one silly thing it opens us up to believing all kinds of silly things.

Such harsh words for creationists! What are these creationists alleged to teach anyway? I know creationists who teach biological evolution without any qualms about the facts or the theory. But I do admit that some have qualms about the materialist philosophy that anti-creationism advocates tout as "truth" is "truth" can have any meaning or any value in that kind of materialism.

By the way, the last time I banged my head against a keyboard the message I got was this:

The quality of mercy is not strained.
It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven,
Upon the place beneath.
It is twice blessed.
It blesseth him that gives and him that takes.
It is mightiest in the mightiest,
It becomes the throned monarch better than his crown.
His sceptre shows the force of temporal power,
An attribute to awe and majesty.
Wherein doth sit the dread and fear of kings.
But mercy is above this sceptred sway,
It is enthroned in the hearts of kings,
It is an attribute to God himself.
And earthly power dost the become likest God's,
Where mercy seasons justice.
Therefore Jew,
Though justice be thy plea, consider this,
That in the course of justice we all must see salvation,
We all do pray for mercy
And that same prayer doth teach us all to render the deeds of mercy.
I have spoke thus much to mittgate the justice of thy plea,
Which if thou dost follow,
This strict court of Venice
Must needs give sentance gainst the merchant there

However, the question "If we came from monkeys why are there still monkeys" is trivially easy.
And thus ridicule-worthy?

I could understand a little consternation if someone asks that, is told that monkeys are our cousins, not our grandparents, then later he asks that again; but as a first-time question, I don't understand the ridicule that ensues.

As I said, Mr. Dawkins explained it without rolling his eyes.

Why can't you guys?

..

I think I am starting to get that principle. It is the principle that one must believe that things happened to monkeys long ago that made them into men, but since it is so slow that we don't see it happen today, we need to take it by faith it really did happen. Tweak this if I am wrong.

My mother said that the doctor told her to roll her eyes as exercise for eye muscles ;)

My mom always told me that if I made faces, it would freeze that way.

I thought she was kidding! ^_^

Agreed -- but at this point, is it ever a "first-time" question?

You would think that someone would do at least a modicum of research and know something about the topic before coming out swinging with this tired old canard and expecting victory.

What's wrong with that question?

I see a major difference between:
Q: If humans came from monkeys, why are there still monkeys?
Q: Since humans came from monkeys, why are there still monkeys?
I see the "if question" ridiculed all the time, and I noticed that Mr. Dawkins, when explaining it, didn't even roll his eyes.

Evolution doesn't require an ancestral species to go extinct, and they can give rise to multiple different descendant species. Although, humans certainly did not evolve from monkeys as the most recent ancestors, that would be apes.

I'm somewhat familiar with the rhetoric.

I'd like to know why the question is ridicule-worthy.

Mostly just because of how much people ask it, and the fact that it is redundant to even answer it anymore, given how many times it has already been answered.

How many times have you heard that question asked here? one? two? three?

And that makes it ridicule-worthy?

Way more than that AV. Also, outside of this site as well. It is a bit of a tropey question or thing to mention, the creationist equivalent of an atheist bringing up invisible pink unicorns or the pasta based creature that shall remain implied but not named.

I take it you're not a school teacher?

Don't school teachers invite the same questions over and over each year to her new class?

What if member 370,018 joins tomorrow, comes here and asks, "Why, if we're descended from apes, are apes still around?"

Then the next day, member 370,019 joins, comes here and ...

Can't we just find repetition of questions that signify no attempts to learn for oneself annoying? -_- and I am 20 years old AV, a bit on the young side to be a teacher, don't you think?

Is that what you cull from such a good question?

If I was an evolutionist, I would welcome that question.
