  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

My church teaches that it is in fact sinful, and they back it up with Scripture.

PS: the context in the Leviticus 19 passage seems to be necromancy: 'for the dead'.

(Hard to equate a Christian fish sign <>< or John 3.16, etc. on a wrist for witness purposes - many Christians find them very effective conversation-starters - with pagan death cults.)

Blessings.

We live according to grace, not the law... Right? I eat bacon, a razor cuts my hair, and I have tattoos. I also give tattoos, lead praise and worship, and am a disciple of Christ. To be inked or not is a matter of personal opinion and conviction. In Revelation it says that Jesus has king of kings lord of lords - written- on His thigh. Think about it.

Hmmmm .....
Here in New Zealand the Maori folk really got into tattoos.

There were various reasons ....... mostly thou to intimidate others ...... In the early days it was a real sign of strength to get cut up that much (if you even wimper in the process you are chicken licken and treated so) and not die of infection.

Now more an art form .................. especially to show your family heritage/roots.

I personally think that as a good witness to Christ a person should not look 'grubby'. By that I mean tatoos that aimed to be arrogant or immoral or to intimidate folk.

Hmmm .... I think the aim of what you want to show is the criteria. And being so permanent that means thinking about it well....

And for myself having seen how impressive the skin is as a bodily organ I do not like the idea of it being injured in the way any form of tatoo does.

PS- Sadly it is often overboard and folk get pretty sick for much of their life as they have so little functioning skin left. Yes a few die pretty early in life.
* I am no Dr but a good Dr friend shared what he had seen.

I thank God I am not under Levitical Law. I am a Christ follower and whether you see it as sin or not, Jesus died on the cross to cover any sins we have made or will make. The most joyous thing is that God uses our sins for His glory...whether it be porn, masturbation, cussing, judging, meanness, hardheartedness, etc.

I have a tattoo that I got 15-20 years ago. It symbolizes God's promises and me wrapping myself around those promises. It has opened opened up some interesting conversations where I get to tell others the meaning of my tattoo and about what God has done in my life. I didn't get the tattoo for this purpose but God uses it and me to witness to others that are judged unfairly for their body art.

Interesting! so have you had some interesting discussions with people when you have had opportunity to tell them of the specifics of God's promises, as a result of your tattoo?

So does Jenn feel the same way about her tattoos?

As far back as I can remember, my mom has always had tattoos on her body. She has more than ever now, and is working on getting her sleeves completed.
..
I'm getting my first tattoo next week.

So did mom go with you to the parlor?

Are any of hers faith based in design?

It's not unusual; and women now make up 59%-70% of parlor clients in North America, apparently.

Many Christians find faith based tattoo designs to be effective in witness conversations.

Yes, some of them are faith based. He actually did the angel wings on my nieces back and the cross on her arm.
So were you at all surprised when your niece wanted to become a tattooed woman? Many women seem to like faith based tattoos.

Today women exercise tattoo equality and those who want it expect to participate fully in it as men do. It used to be a man thing, but now it's widely regarded as a thoroughly womanly thing to participate in (59%-70% of parlor clients in North America are female, apparently).

You don't want it yourself; it's not for everyone, but regarding your niece I guess that you were pleased for her sake that she wanted to do it with something faith based, right?

Yeah. I preferred that she get a faith based tat rather than a secular tat. Her ink, like her dad's was also ancestral. Celtic and Native American to be precise, but based on Christian imagery.

I guess it marked her transition from a girl to an adult, as well?

So often it's a rite of passage for young people; and it's nice that many choose something faith based.

Yep. But I warned her not to get something she would be ashamed of later in life. She got her first tat at age 20. That was the wings. The cross came about a year later. She is now 24.

Seems like she is very determined and also hooked - in a nice way - on going under the inking needle.

My brother has some tribal bands around his arms, a celtic cross, and the initials of his kids, nieces, and our grandmother. He works for a public utility and they dont like people showing ink. Its a bit like the US military these days, no visible ink.

To a degree. As she put it, "I dont want to look trashy". So, I doubt she will get many more.

She is engaged now, so if anything, she will probably do like my sister and get an eternity symbol with the initials of any kids she may have. My sister also has a cross.
