• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Hello,

I am 27 years old, and I quit smoking over 1 year ago, after 13 years of daily smoking.
I used nothing else than my motivation, and my understanding of addictions.
I understood the talking snake is a metaphor for my own mind.
Think about it: when you are a smoker (or a slave of any addiction), your own mind is deceiving you into doing something that is bad for you.
The Bible defines satan as the great deceiver, and I could not find anything more deceiving that the animal mind of mankind.
Think about it: when you are addicted to tobacco, your mind tells you that you need to smoke, that you will feel good after you smoke.
This is an illusion, nobody needs to smoke, did you smoke from your birth to age 10? The reason you feel good after you smoke, is because you feel bad due to the lack of nicotine in the first place.
If you stop taking nicotine, you won't feel bad anymore after few days.

It might be hard to quit at first, because of the physical uncomfort from the lack of nicotine, but it doesn't last long once you understand it's temporary.

If you have any question about any addiction, feel free to ask me.

For me it was entirely diffirent, having been a heavy smoker for over 4o years, 30 of those a Christian, I always felt and knew smoking was wrong and a sin..
I am now non-smoker for 2 years now and feel 10 times better about myself, wnen I smoked I felt like a chain round me that was holding me back and weighing me down..I a had tried dozens of times to quit without success, even prayer and asking Gods help..
In my country our GVMT subsidizes nicotine replacemwnt therapy to help those to quit, I had used their products many time with mediocre success..

Then 2 years ago I felt a strong burning desire to finally quit..I had a plan, partly with the help of quitline, the GVMT suppliers of the NRTP I was using..

Here is how I finally broke free:

*** I set a date in which was to be the day I would be smoke free

*** From the time I had made the decision, I started to train my body that I will not be smoking at that date..on my bathroom mirror, fridge magnets, office, I would post positive reinforcement notes I would read every day..also declare my home and vehicle smoke free.

*** When my quit day arrived, I used the NRP for several months, all the while I would hourly state I was no longer a smoker..

The secret is that you have to really WANT to quit, set your smoke free date and remain smoke free, declaring that you are no longer a smoker, that Jesus has set you free.

Smoking was the hardest addiction I ever had to conquer. It was nearly a 60 year addiction that I continued even after numerous health issue including lung cancer, (Which did not slow me down)

But Allaah(swt) saved me from myself and I have not had a desire to smoke after I chose to submit to him.

Yoga exercises are a great way to help you stop smoking. Hatha yoga exercises force you to breath deeply and this gives stimulation to the mouth, throat, lungs, and body thereby reducing the desire to smoke. Pranayama is a more advanced form of yoga and helps more so.

Try it and good luck in ending this annoying problem of smoking.

I went cold turkey 7 years ago..
My eldest grandchild was born with Asthma. His health was more important than my nasty habit.
How's that for motivation?

Oh,, sounds really painful :( I wish I could help you with it but to be honest its being so many years I'm asking my husband to stop smoking and I'd tried my level best to make them realize that its really bad for your health but they never listen to me!! what should I do now??
Any help would be really appreciated!!

You have got to want to quit. Like any addiction, I quit cold turkey the same day I quit using cocaine, alcohol and marijuana. It's not easy. But like everything else in life what is good for you to obtain it is never easy.

I had started back after quitting for years because I was around people who smoked. A bad habit I knew I had to quit because it was effecting my breathing (I have asthma). Anyway, I used a vape and that was worse on me than the cigarettes. Just my personal experience, I know people love their vapes. Anyway, I avoided being around smokers and prayed alot. Also I made a pinterest board on the negative effects of smoking on the body. Visuals go a long way! I only had to think of that or look at it and that did it for me. If anyone needs encouragement or prayer I will be glad to help!

Ms. Rebecca Sue:

Glad you managed to quit. So did I, by God's grace.

Since you were a smoker once, do you find that those who are ex-smokers tend to be a little less sanctimonious about smoking that those who never smoked and have strongly voiced opinions about it?

Blessings.

I half heartedly made 2 attempts and had little success and gained about 40 lbs which I did not loose when I started back. The 1st attempt did not last long 6 months, I caved the first time I faced an emotional situation with a relative (my least favorite nephew). Duh..

2nd time I stayed quit for sometime, but I was miserable, and now getting fat and irate-I was "white knuckling" the process and had not realized the habit..was harder to kick than the physical addition to nicotine. My husband bought me a pack of cigarettes threw em on the table and said.."I want my wife back"..I caved, cried and felt utterly defeated so I opened em and "let it be on his head" :)

The last time..I changed my thinking-realized it was 3 fold just like drugs or booze and approached it differently. I prepared-knowing what they physical withdrawals were like I planned small diverting productive tasks that I could busy myself with til the cravings would subside. I painted my nails, did a pile of sewing on buttons, a few DIY projects, etc. Knowing the habit was harder than the addiction this time I chose NOT to use gum, patches or E-cigs. I had to break the smoke habit. I had a disposable E cig that I kept in my car--as a ER contingency plan, but I never opened the package.

It was not easy, but it was doable. I had been a smoker for over 30 yrs. I used the 3 P's (Pause, Pray and Proceed) At my worst I smoked 3 pks a day and BF quitting I had gotten down to 1.5 pks ever other day. Never could ween down any further so just had to throw em down (away). Gid rid of the lighters/ashtrays the first day. Play whatever games you have to in order to get through the 1st 3-4 days.

You can do it..but there is no pixie dust pain free way. Just dive in an get it over with then work on the attitude so you can remain smoke free.

Great you managed to quit! Keep sewing on buttons and painting your nails if you ever feel like smoking.
